Oklahoma executes Richard Fairchild

Richard Fairchild had been on death row since 1993 for killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, Adam Broomhall.

The state of Oklahoma has executed death row inmate Richard Fairchild at the state penitentiary in McAlester.

He was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m. Thursday by lethal injection.

Fairchild had been on death row since 1993 for killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, Adam Broomhall.

In October, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted against recommending clemency for Fairchild. 

Broomhall's family told the board that they just wanted to heal and asked to allow them to do that.

Fairchild's attorney claimed he suffered from mental illness and potential brain damage because he was raised in an abusive household with substance abuse.

Supporters said they saw Fairchild getting worse and deteriorating. 

They also said he told them that he woke up every morning, said a prayer for Broomhall and wished he hadn't been an alcoholic.

Richard Fairchild, who was denied clemency in October, has been on death row for 26 years.

Fairchild becomes the 5th condemned inmate to be executed by Oklahoma this year and the 119th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1990.

Fairchild becomes the 16th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1,556th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.

Texas executed Ramiro Gonzales on Wednesday despite a stunning reversal from a psychiatrist who helped send him to death row 17 years ago.  Gonzales, 41, was killed by lethal injection as punishment for kidnapping, raping and murdering Bridget Townsend when they were both 18. At the time, Gonzales was struggling with drug addiction. He killed Townsend, his drug dealer’s girlfriend, while trying to steal drugs. He had turned 18 two months before the killing, making him barely old enough to be legally eligible to be sentenced to death.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana is one of 27 states where state-backed executions are still legal, but no one has been put to death in a Hoosier prison in 15 years. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb and Attorney General Todd Rokita look to change that. On Wednesday, Rokita’s office filed a motion with the Indiana Supreme Court seeking to set a date for the execution of Joseph Corcoran — a Fort Wayne man found guilty of murdering four people in 1997.

Pakistan imposes death penalty on Christian for desecrating Quran

A Pakistani court has sentenced a Christian man to death over blasphemy charges.  The man is accused of uploading pictures of torn pages of the Quran on social media, as a police spokesperson told the German Press Agency on Monday.  The verdict was handed down by an Anti-Terrorism Court in the city of Sahiwal in the Punjab province. The incident is believed to be connected to riots in the Pakistani city of Jaranwala, which caused nationwide outrage.
