Madison County Circuit Judge Chris Comer sentenced Hardy Thursday morning after denying the defense’s motion for a new trial. Hardy was convicted by a jury in April 2022 on all five of the charges he faced, including capital murder during a robbery, two counts of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree domestic violence and aggravated stalking and one count of discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle. A migrant worker from Assam was sentenced to death by the District and Sessions Court for raping and murdering a 60-year-old woman at Puthenvelikkara in 2018. According to reports, the North Paravoor Additional District and Sessions Court pronounced a death sentence against  28-year-old Parimal Sahu, a resident of Nagaon district in Assam. Satoshi Uematsu, a 30-year-old who formerly worked at the Tsukui Yamayuri En care facility in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, told Kyodo News even if his defense counsel files an appeal by the March 30 deadline, he will request it be dropped. The defense cast doubt on the results of a psychiatric assessment, pointing out that the doctor who performed it had not taken into account a marijuana-induced psychotic disorder. An elderly man who allegedly killed his 79-year-old flatmate appeared in court yesterday via video link from Central Police Division. Pak Kian Huat, alias Pek Kiah Huat, 82, was charged with murdering Madam Lim Soi Moy in a Housing Board unit on the 21st storey of Block 191 Lorong 4 Toa Payoh. The police had received a call about the case at around 3.40am on Sunday and officers found Madam Lim motionless in the unit. She was later pronounced dead by paramedics. Neighbours told The Straits Times that Pak and Madam Lim were not married to each other but had lived in the same flat for more than 20 years. Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Sally Olsen sentenced Michael Furman to a minimum of 48 years to life, which means he will be eligible for release in about 18 years. He has already served about 30 years. Furman was 17 when he raped and killed 85-year-old Ann Presler in her home on April 27, 1989. Furman had been going door to door looking for odd jobs, and Presler had agreed to pay him to wash her windows. While working inside, Furman bludgeoned Presler to death with several different objects. In 1990, Furman was charged as an adult and was sentenced to death after a jury found him guilty of aggravated first-degree murder. A court in Japan has sentenced a former care worker to death for killing 3 elderly residents at a nursing home in Kawasaki, near Tokyo. Yokohama District Court on Thursday found 25-year-old Hayato Imai guilty of murdering the 3 victims by pushing them from the balconies of their rooms. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty in the trial. The 3 residents all died in 2014.  They were an 87-year-old man and 2 women, aged 86 and 96. The judges in the trial ruled that the victims would have been physically incapable of climbing over the balcony railings by themselves.  They ruled out the possibility that the deaths were suicides or accidents. The ruling also rejected the possibility that other staff members had committed the crimes.
