India: SC upholds Delhi HC's death penalty verdict to Nirbhaya's rapists

Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava has filed a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking the execution of the death penalty awarded to the convicts in Nirbhaya rape and murder case.  As per reports, the lawyer has appealed the apex court to issue directions to the central government to execute the death penalty awarded to all convicts within 2 weeks from the listing of the case. The apex court has reportedly admitted the PIL. Confirming the report, advocate Srivastava has stated that Nirbhaya's last words before she succumbed to her injuries were, "Burn them alive". Rajasthan: Man gets death penalty for raping a minor

JAIPUR: Father of an infant girl was awarded the death sentence by the Jhunjhunu (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Court in on Friday for raping a minor on August 2. This is the fourth case in the state where the accused under POCSO were handed out death sentence. Nand Kishore, Special Public Prosecutor, POCSO Court, said this is the first case when the death sentence has been given to a rapist within 20 days of presenting the charge-sheet in a court. Accused Vinod Banjara, 23, is a resident of Dausa and used to sell utensils, Kishore said. On August 2, he raped the minor in a village when her maternal grandparents were away. The police formed a special team to investigate the case, Kishore said. “Through CCTVs, the accused was identified and arrested on August 3. Twelve Indian States Think the Death Penalty Shouldn’t Be Abolished

Only Tripura and Karnataka have so far told the home ministry that the practice should be done away with. New Delhi: Fourteen states and union territories have replied so far to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ query on the death penalty, and only two of them – Karnataka and Tripura – want it abolished. Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have voted against doing away with the practice, Indian Express reported. In 2015, the Law Commission of India, with Justice A.P. Rajasthan mulls death penalty for child rapists

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], Feb 20 (ANI): The Rajasthan government will soon table a bill in the state assembly seeking death penalty for those convicted of raping minors. Rajasthan minister Gulab Chand Kataria told ANI that his government similar to that of Madhya Pradesh is mulling to bring a law under which, those convicted of raping minors will be executed. "We are working on bringing a law similar to that has been made in Madhya Pradesh which awards death for the rape of children aged 12 or below. It will be tabled in the assembly when it is ready," he said. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on December 4 last year, unanimously passed 'The Penal Law (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Bill-2017' to award death sentence to those found guilty of raping girls aged 12 or below.
