What Could Happen in the First Nitrogen Execution in the U.S.: A doctor on what’s new about the latest death penalty experiment

A doctor on what’s new — and what isn’t — about the latest death penalty experiment. Next week, Alabama prison officials plan to escort Kenneth Eugene Smith from his cell, strap a mask to his face and replace his breathing air with nitrogen gas. It would likely be the first execution of its kind anywhere in the world .

With just five days left for the execution of the death sentence in the infamous 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case, the families of the convicts on Sunday appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind to grant the convicts a death by euthanasia. The four convicts in the case are to be hanged together at 5.30 am on March 20, according to an order by a Delhi court earlier this month. As per reports, a total of 13 letters have been received by the president that have all been sent by the family members of the convicts.  Two of the letters have been written by the family members of Mukesh while the families of Pawan and Vinay both sent 4 letters each.  The rest of the 3 letters have been sent by the family members of Aks...

Satoshi Uematsu: Japanese man who killed 19 disabled people sentenced to death

A Japanese man has been sentenced to death for a stabbing rampage in 2016 which resulted in the death of 19 disabled people at a care home. Satoshi Uematsu said people with disabilities who were unable to communicate well had no human rights, said broadcaster Kyodo. The 30-year old had once worked in the care facility, located near Tokyo. The case is one of Japan's worst mass killings and has shocked people in a country where violent crime is rare. In an earlier interview with Japan's Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Uematsu had said there was "no point in living" for people with mental disabilities and that he "had to do it for the sake of society". The Yokohama District Court on Monday ordered him to death by hanging. Uematsu previously said he did not plan to appeal against any verdict or sentence. 'He abused marijuana' During the trial earlier this year, the former employee of the Sagamihara care home did not dispute...

¿Es posible que coexistan la pena de muerte y la democracia?

Click here to Google translate this story into your own language.

Give pedophiles 'involuntary euthanasia': Adviser for Hannah Tamaki's Coalition New Zealand Party

A campaign manager for Hannah Tamaki's Coalition New Zealand Party [ Hannah Tamaki has become the leader of a new political party, Coalition New Zealand. It is not a Christian party but it is strong on "family values" - DPN] has called for the Government to introduce involuntary euthanasia for pedophiles who are repeat offenders. Jevan Goulter, who told the Herald his personal views don't necessarily represent the political party's stance, says its time for New Zealand to discuss the death penalty and involuntary euthanasia, alongside David Seymour's End of Life Bill after passing its 2nd reading. The campaign manager originally took to social media stating he wanted the euthanasia bill killed and the reintroduction of the death penalty for pedophiles who are repeat offenders. "Kill the Euthanasia Bill, reintroduce the 1961 death penalty for third time offenders," he said in a video. "If we're already talking about euthana...

Kentucky: Capital punishment must die

In 1997, Larry Osborne was 17 years old. At that age, most kids would be obsessed about their SAT scores or lining up a date for the senior prom. Mr. Osborne, on the other hand, was standing trial for his very life, accused of breaking into the Whitley County home of 82-year-old Sam Davenport and murdering him and his 76-year-old wife, Lillian.  Despite the absence of any physical evidence linking him to the crime scene, Mr. Osborne was nevertheless convicted and sentenced to death based solely on the recorded grand jury testimony of an alleged witness who drowned before the trial.  Kentucky's Supreme Court unanimously overturned the conviction, necessitating a new trial. At the conclusion of the do-over, Mr. Osborne was acquitted of all charges and released immediately. That it "only" took 6 years to go from being the youngest man to ever sit on Kentucky's death row to a free man is a testament to the skill and tenacity of Mr. Osborne's legal defense t...

Catholics on Left and Right Find Common Ground Opposing Death Penalty

Death Row, Polunsky Unit, Livingston, Texas ( more photos here ) As the editor of The National Catholic Reporter, a national biweekly, Dennis Coday reads his competitor, The National Catholic Register. But he does not have to agree with it. The Reporter is seen as somewhat liberal in theology and politics. The Register, a competing biweekly with a confusingly similar name, is popular with more theologically traditional Roman Catholics, who often fall to the right politically. But last year, seeing the amount of attention that The Register was giving to arguments opposing the death penalty, Mr. Coday came up with an idea: Maybe the 2 newspapers could collaborate on an editorial calling on Catholics to oppose the death penalty. "What struck me the most was Oklahoma Archbishop Paul Coakley came out strongly against it," Mr. Coday said. "And his comments were covered by The National Catholic Register." Indeed, The Register had covered Catholic death...

Doctors block Belgian murderer's euthanasia

(Reuters) - Doctors in Belgium have rejected an imprisoned murderer and rapist's request for medically assisted suicide, the Justice Ministry said on Tuesday, less than a week before he was due to receive a lethal injection. Justice Minister Koen Geens told local media last week that Frank Van Den Bleeken, serving a life sentence, would receive the injection on Jan. 11, after the ministry consented to his euthanasia request in September . A Justice Ministry statement said medical confidentiality prevented the doctors, whom it did not identify, from disclosing why they had decided to stop the process. Spokeswoman Sieghild Lacoere said the ruling did not mean that prisoners could no longer ask for euthanasia. Van Den Bleeken's assisted death would have been the first involving a prisoner since Belgium legalized euthanasia 12 years ago -- one of only a few countries worldwide to have done so. The convicted serial killer will instead be assessed at a newly opened...

Belgian murderer to die by lethal injection at own request on January 11: media

(Reuters) - A Belgian murderer and rapist serving a life sentence is to be allowed to die by lethal injection next Sunday following a ruling under laws in Belgium permitting people to request euthanasia, local media reported. Frank Van Den Bleeken, who has argued that he had no prospect of release since he cannot overcome his violent sexual impulses, will be granted his wish for medically assisted suicide in a prison in Bruges, Belgium. He has said he wants to end years of mental anguish. "Euthanasia will indeed be implemented," a spokeswoman for Belgian justice minister Koen Geens told Belgian daily De Morgen. "The time has come." The justice ministry was not immediately available for comment but Reuters reported in September that the ministry had given its consent but had yet to set a date. The judicial ruling was the first involving a prisoner since the euthanasia law was introduced 12 years ago. Belgium, like the rest of the European ...

Belgian Murderer and Rapist Serving Life Sentence Granted Request To Die After Years Of Mental Anguish

BRUSSELS, Sept 15 (Reuters) - A Belgian murderer and rapist serving a life sentence is to be allowed to have doctors end his life following a ground-breaking ruling under laws in Belgium permitting people to request euthanasia. Frank Van Den Bleeken had argued that he had no prospect of release since he could not overcome his violent sexual impulses and so he wanted to exercise his right to medically assisted suicide in order to end years of mental anguish. "Over recent years, he has been seen by several doctors and psychologists and their conclusion is that he is suffering, and suffering unbearably," his lawyer, Jos Vander Velpen, told state broadcaster VRT. The judicial ruling was the first involving a prisoner since the euthanasia law was introduced 12 years ago. It was not clear when the medical procedure, to be conducted in a hospital, would take place, the lawyer added. Because he was a prisoner, his client's request had been dependent on the cons...

Most Czechs support euthanasia, death penalty - poll

About 2/3 of Czechs support the possibility of euthanasia and the introduction of capital punishment, according to a CVVM institute's poll released today. The poll showed that church-goers are often against euthanasia and the death penalty. While also people aged over 60 tend to be more opposed to euthanasia, capital punishment has lower support among university graduates. 64 % believe that Czech legislation should make euthanasia possible, 27 % are against it. Nearly 2/3 of the respondents would like to have capital punishment reintroduced and 1/3 is against the idea. However, in the early 1990s, support for the death penalty was higher, being around 3/4 of the population. The poll was conducted among 1115 persons over 15 in early May.
