KOCHI: The Kerala high court on Tuesday sought the state government’s views on an appeal filed by the husband of Uthra challenging his conviction in the infamous snakebite murder case. A division bench led by Justice K Vinod Chandran issued notice to the government after considering an appeal filed by Suraj S Kumar challenging his conviction for the offences of murder, causing hurt by poison, and causing disappearance of evidence. In the case in which Suraj was accused of murdering his 25-year-old wife by throwing a starving cobra on her while she was sleeping, a sessions court had convicted him on October 13. A court in Kerala's Kollam District has awarded double life imprisonment to Sooraj S Kumar, who was found guilty of murdering his wife Uthra using a cobra . The court which found the 27-year-old guilty on Monday on several counts sentenced him to 17 years in jail, which will be followed by double life imprisonment. "According to the court, the accused will have to first serve 17 years and then only the double life imprisonment will come into force. So technically speaking unless the government gives the accused a remission, for the rest of his life he will have to be in jail," Public Prosecutor G Manoharan said.
