Texas sets execution date for man accused in shaken baby case

A Texas court on Monday set an execution date for Robert Roberson, who was sentenced to death in 2003 for killing his 2-year-old daughter but has consistently challenged the conviction on the claim that it was based on questionable science.

Japan | Man sentenced to death over murder-robbery

A 39-year-old man was sentenced to death Tuesday for murdering a woman and her son and robbing them at her residence in Oita Prefecture, southwestern Japan, in 2020.

During the trial at the Oita District Court, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Shoichi Sato, presenting evidence including DNA from the trunk of Sato's car that matched the female victim, Takako Yamana. 

However, his defense team maintained he was not guilty.

In its closing argument, the defense pointed out that the analysis of bloodstains found in Sato's car revealed a DNA type that did not match either the two victims or Sato, insisting that someone else committed the crime.

According to the indictment, Sato fatally stabbed 79-year-old Takako Yamana and her 51-year-old son Hiroyuki, a postal worker, multiple times on Feb. 2, 2020, at the residence in Usa, stealing approximately 88,000 yen ($540).

Police arrested Sato about a year and eight months after the incident.

Texas executed Ramiro Gonzales on Wednesday despite a stunning reversal from a psychiatrist who helped send him to death row 17 years ago.  Gonzales, 41, was killed by lethal injection as punishment for kidnapping, raping and murdering Bridget Townsend when they were both 18. At the time, Gonzales was struggling with drug addiction. He killed Townsend, his drug dealer’s girlfriend, while trying to steal drugs. INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana is one of 27 states where state-backed executions are still legal, but no one has been put to death in a Hoosier prison in 15 years. Pakistan imposes death penalty on Christian for desecrating Quran

A Pakistani court has sentenced a Christian man to death over blasphemy charges.  The man is accused of uploading pictures of torn pages of the Quran on social media, as a police spokesperson told the German Press Agency on Monday.  The verdict was handed down by an Anti-Terrorism Court in the city of Sahiwal in the Punjab province. The incident is believed to be connected to riots in the Pakistani city of Jaranwala, which caused nationwide outrage.
