Texas sets execution date for man accused in shaken baby case

California death row inmate dies in prison

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. - Condemned inmate Emilio Avalos, 40, who was on California’s death row from Riverside County, was pronounced dead this week.

Officials said it happened Wednesday at 5:53 p.m. at San Quentin State Prison. 

The cause of death is unknown pending the results of an autopsy.

Avalos was sentenced to death by a Riverside County jury on Feb. 22, 2013, for the Dec. 19, 2001, first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, 20-year-old Marine Cpl. Henry Lozano, and the Dec. 21, 1994, shooting death of 17-year-old Jahi Collins. 

In addition to the murder charges, Avalos was also convicted of the attempted murder of Collins’ friend Bobby Wilson, who was left paralyzed in the 1994 gunfire.

Avalos had been on California’s death row since March 5, 2013.

Since 1978, when California reinstated capital punishment, 71 condemned inmates have died from natural causes, 25 have committed suicide, 13 have been executed in California, one was executed in Missouri, one was executed in Virginia, 8 have died from other causes, and seven (including Avalos) causes of death are pending. 

There are currently 745 offenders on California’s death row.

USA | Alabama’s third execution of 2024 imminent

Keith Gavin is scheduled to be executed in Alabama on July 18, 2024. He was convicted of a 1998 murder and sentenced to death in 1999. The jury vote was 10-2 for the death penalty. In 2020, a federal judge ruled that Gavin’s legal representation during sentencing was constitutionally inadequate. However, the Court of Appeals reversed this decision in 2022. International legal standards require effective legal assistance at all stages for those facing the death penalty. This standard was not met in Gavin’s case.

Japan | Man sentenced to death over murder-robbery

A 39-year-old man was sentenced to death Tuesday for murdering a woman and her son and robbing them at her residence in Oita Prefecture, southwestern Japan, in 2020. During the trial at the Oita District Court, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Shoichi Sato, presenting evidence including DNA from the trunk of Sato's car that matched the female victim, Takako Yamana.

Kozhikode/ Riyadh: A criminal court in Riyadh has overturned the death sentence of Machilakath Abdul Rahim, a resident of Seenath Manzil in Kodambuzha, who had been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for the past 18 years for the murder of a Saudi national.  The court’s decision came after the victim's relatives appeared in court and expressed their willingness to forgive Rahim in exchange for blood money.
