Prime Minister Ishiba: "I want to deepen discussion within the LDP" regarding the death penalty
Regarding the death penalty system, Prime Minister Ishiba responded to a request from a private group made up of members of the judicial system to set up a conference within the government and the Diet to fundamentally review the system, by expressing his desire to deepen discussion within the Liberal Democratic Party.
A private study group consisting of judicial officials and surviving victims' families, which has been discussing the death penalty system at the invitation of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, has recently compiled a report stating that a conference to fundamentally review the system should be established within the government and the Diet.
Prime Minister Ishiba met with members of the group in the Diet on the 18th to receive the report and was asked to give concrete consideration to establishing a conference.
According to a person who was present, in response to the request, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his intention to deepen discussion on the death penalty within the Liberal Democratic Party.
Regarding the report, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi previously stated that "imposing the death penalty for extremely serious and heinous crimes is unavoidable," explaining that at present, the government has no intention of establishing a conference.
