Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 6, 2024: Naghi Zayerfar, a man on death row for drug-related charges, was executed in Maragheh Prison.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Maragheh Prison on 2 January. His identity has been established as Naghi Zayerfar who was sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.
An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Naghi Zayerfar was a taxi driver between Maragheh and Miandoab prior to his arrest around three years ago. His brother was also executed for drug charges in Ahar Prison in May.”
At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
On 21 December, IHRNGO warned of more drug executions being carried out after an Iranian MP from Lorestan province stated that the cases of 1000-2000 drug death row inmates were at implementation stage.
The number of drug executions dramatically dropped in 2018 following a 2017 Amendment to the Anti-Narcotics Laws. Consequently, drug executions ranged between 24-30 per annum between 2018-2020. The Amendment was reversed in practice in 2021 when executions increased ten-fold to 126 in 2021 and doubled again in 2022 with 256 drug-related executions. On 13 September 2023, IHRNGO
reported a 94% rise in the number of drug-related executions in the year following the start of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement in September 2022.
Execution in Hamedan
Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 5, 2024: Saeed Moradian, a man on death row for drug-related charges, was executed in Hamedan Central Prison.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Hamedan Central Prison on 4 January. His identity has been established as 29-year-old Saeed (Ali) Moradian who was arrested around two years ago.
He was sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.
At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
IRGC Member Mohsen Saravani Identified as Man Executed for Espionage Offences
Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 5, 2024: State media reported the execution of an unnamed man for links with foreign services including Mossad” in Zahedan Central Prison on 16 December 2023. Iran Human Rights has established his identity as Mohsen Saravani, an IRGC member.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, the unnamed man whose execution was reported by state media on 16 December was 24-years-old Mohsen Saravani who was sentenced to death for charges of efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) through “links with foreign services including Mossad.”
Court documents obtained by Iran Human Rights show that Mohsen Saravani was an IRGC member arrested on 17 April 2022.
He was convicted of “Intelligence and espionage collaboration for the benefit of the hostile Zionist regime (Mossad) and collection of classified information including confidential, highly confidential and secret, through government agents and providing classified information to the hostile services officers directly and indirectly to incompetent individuals.”
Mohsen had two co-defendants in this case. A man named Afshin Ghorbani who has also been sentenced to death for the same charges and the woman in the case has received a custodial sentence.
Man executed in Yazd
Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 5, 2024: Asghar Barzegar, a man on death row for drug-related charges, was executed in Yazd Central Prison.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Yazd Central Prison on 4 January. His identity has been established as 32-year-old Asghar Barzegar who was arrested three years ago.
He was sentenced to death for drug-related charges.
At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
3 Hanged in Ardabil
Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 3, 2024: State media reported the execution of three unnamed men for drug-related charges in Ardabil Central Prison.
Quoting the Ardabil Judiciary, IRNA reported the executed of three men in Ardabil Central Prison. The report which was published on 2 January does not specify their identities or the location of their executions.
According to the report, the three men were arrested and sentenced to death for charges of “buying and carrying heroine and opium.”
