In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran | Execution of 6 Prisoners on Sunday and 16 Executions in One Week

International call for immediate action to save the lives of prisoners sentenced to death, especially political prisoners

The inhumane regime of the mullahs, fearing a potential uprising, persists in its campaign of terror through brutal executions and the issuance of medieval-style death sentences, aiming to instill an atmosphere of fear and horror.

Over a week, at least 16 prisoners were executed, and 10 political prisoners are awaiting execution. According to the TASNIM news agency associated with the Quds Force terrorist organization, on January 10, Gholamhossein Mohseni Eje’i, the head of the regime’s judiciary, stated a few days ago, “Today, the sword of justice must go hand in hand with preaching… (not only) the judicial and security apparatus must certainly be together; but, there is no other way in some places.”

Ahmad Latifi, Ali Akbar Moradian, Akbar Khormtash, Hadi Nazari, Seyed Ali Miri, and another prisoner were hanged in Karaj Central Prison on Sunday, January 14. On January 13, Reza Heidari in Khorramabad, on January 11, Nazam Dahmardeh in Yazd, Meysam Habibi in Kermanshah, and Freydoun Abdi in Qazvin, and on January 9, a prisoner named Keyvan, and the day before, two prisoners named Mohammad Ali and Mahmoud Mirzaei, were executed in Qezelhessar Prison.

Meanwhile, 10 political prisoners, whose death sentences have been confirmed by the Supreme Court of the mullahs, are awaiting their execution. They include:

– Two from the 2022 uprising – Mojahed Kurkur in Sheiban Ahvaz Prison and Reza Rasaei in Dieselabad Kermanshah Prison,

– Four from fellow Sunnis, Farhad Salimi, Anwar Khezri, Khosrow Besharat, and Kamran Sheikheh, in Qezelhessar Prison, who have been imprisoned for 14 years and their co-defendants Davoud Abdollahi, Ayoub Karimi, and Ghasem Abesteh have previously been executed in the same prison,

– And four Kurdish prisoners – Pejman Fatehi, Vafa Azariar, Hajir Faramarzi, and Mohsen Mazloum. Today, the families of these prisoners gathered outside Evin Prison to protest their unjust execution verdicts.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations, relevant organizations, the European Union, and member countries to take urgent action to save the lives of thousands of prisoners, especially political prisoners. It also reiterates the demand for an international fact-finding mission to visit Iranian prisons.

This regime must be ostracized from the international community, and its leaders, especially Ali Khamenei, Ebrahim Raisi, and Gholamhossein Eje’i, must be brought to justice for four decades of crimes against humanity and genocide.
