In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran | Two Men Executed in Qazvin

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); December 17, 2022: Yousef Mirzabeigi and Mohammadali Seyedi, two men sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, were executed in Qazvin Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Qazvin Central Prison (Choobdar) on December 15. Their identities have been established as 36-year-old Yousef Mirzabeigi (pictured) and Mohammadali Seyedi who were sentenced to qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Yousef Mirzabeigi was arrested for the murder of his wife 10 years ago and Mohammadali was arrested four years ago.”

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law.

Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

More than 500 people including 2 juvenile offenders have been executed in 2022, the highest annual execution since 2017.
