In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran | Man Executed for Murder in Khorramabad, Inmate Executed for Drug Offences in Jiroft

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 28, 2022: Ali Heydar Dehghani who was sentenced to qisas for murder, has been executed in Khorramabad Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Khorramabad Central Prison on the morning of February 27. His identity has been established as 40-year-old Ali Heydar Ghorbani who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

Hrana newsagency which first reported news of  his execution quoted an informed source as saying: “He had been wanted for murder for a number of years. Last year, after the victim’s family agreed to accept diya (blood money), he turned himself in on the condition of paying the diya and had been behind bars since.”

At the time of writing, Ali Heydar’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter and no grading, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Jasem Ghanbari Executed for Drug Offences in Jiroft


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 28, 2022: Jasem Ghanbari, a Baluch man sentenced to death on drug-related charges, was executed in Jiroft Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Jiroft Prison on the morning of February 27. His identity has been reported as 30-year-old Jasem Ghanbari, a Delgan native who had been sentenced to death for drug offences.

Jasem Ghanbari was arrested on charges of carrying drugs in Jiroft in 2018. He was sentenced to death for the charges by the Jiroft Revolutionary Court in 2020.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, Jasem was denied the right to a last visit with his family.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.

The following document is a written record of convicted killer Hamida Djandoubi's last moments before he was guillotined in a Marseilles prison on September 10, 1977. This written record -- dated September 9 -- was written by a judge appointed to witness the execution. Alabama SC approves second nitrogen gas execution

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the execution of a second inmate by nitrogen gas, months after the state became the first state to put a person to death with the previously untested method. Justices granted Attorney General Steve Marshall’s request for an execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt.

Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. The defense argued for life in prison without parole, saying Thursday morning that Elders’ actions came after a lifetime of drug addiction and going in and out of jails and prisons, being kicked out of his family home as a teenager and not receiving support from family members.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

Alabama approves second nitrogen hypoxia execution

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the nitrogen hypoxia execution of Alan Eugene Miller, setting the stage for the state to have at least four executions this year. Miller's execution would be the second carried out using nitrogen gas, the Alabama Attorney General’s office says. Miller, now 59, was convicted of killing three people during a pair of 1999 workplace shootings in suburban Birmingham. He was living in Autauga County at the time.
