Iran | Man Executed for Murder in Dezful Prison, Man Executed on Drug Charges in Isfahan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); March 3, 2022: An unnamed man who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for the murder of a policeman, was executed in Dezful Prison.

According to the Judiciary’s newsagency, Mizan, a man was executed in Dezful Prison on the morning of March 3. The unnamed man was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for the murder of a policeman in the course of a robbery.

The man was reportedly arrested six years ago and had been behind bars since.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter and no grading, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Akbar Shahsavand Executed on Drug Charges in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); March 2, 2021: Akbar Shahsavand who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges, has been executed in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on the morning of March 2. His identity has been established as 36-year-old Akbar Shahsavand who was sentenced to death for drug offences.

He was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court and had spent around four years behind bars.

Speaking to Iran Human Rights, an informed source said: “Another three prisoners are scheduled to be executed on drug charges next week. One of them who’s called Zobeid is an Afghan national.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.
