Activists Call on President Biden to End the Federal Death Penalty Before Leaving Office

Image
A conversation with Death Penalty Action Co-founder and Executive Director Abe Bonowitz. Now that Joe Biden is a lame duck president, activists are holding him accountable to make good on his promise to end the federal death penalty during his remaining six months as president. Biden’s election campaign in 2020 had pledged to end the federal death penalty and incentivize the remaining 27 states that still allow executions to do the same. While he made history as the first president in the United States to openly oppose the death penalty, there has been no movement to actually end federal executions during his nearly four years in office.

Brunei | Father-son duo among seven arrested for drug trafficking

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN) A father-son duo with five other local men were arrested by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) enforcement personnel on May 19 at a residence in RPN Kampong Meragang for allegedly involved in illegal drug trafficking activities on Tuesday (June 9).

The seven suspects are aged between 21 to 52.

Seizures during the arrest were several plastic packages and straws containing crystalised substances believed to be Methylamphetamine or Syabu, a Class A controlled drug weighing over 12 grammes with an estimated value of more than BND2,000, according to a statement from the NCB.

Meanwhile several utensils used for drug consumption and local money of over BND1,000 believed to be proceeds from drug activities were also found.

The case is investigated under several sections of the Misuse of Drugs Acts (MDA).

Meanwhile, another two are investigated under Section 6(a) of MDA, Chapter 27 for the possession of controlled drugs that carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of BND20,000 or both.

Under Section 6(b) of MDA, Chapter 27 for the consumption of controlled drugs suspects face a penalty of imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of BND20,000 or both.

One suspect is being investigated under Section 7 of MDA, Chapter 27 for or possession of utensils used for drug consumption that carries a penalty of up to three years imprisonment or a fine of BND10,000 or both.

The NCB reminded the public that drug offences are regarded as serious crimes and any involvements in any form of drug activities may carry capital punishment under the MDA, Chapter 27.

The enforcement agency added that children are foundation and hope for the future generation of the country, therefore parents are urged to set good examples for their children and equip them with religious knowledge to prevent them from engaging in immoral activities such as drug abuse.
