Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Two Vietnam former ministers face death penalty over bribe charges

Two former Vietnamese information ministers have been charged with corruption, state media reported Tuesday, a charge which in the country carries the death sentence.

Nguyen Bac Son, who served as information minister from 2011-2016, was charged with "violating the regulations on management and use of public investment capital" and "taking bribes," state media reported.

Truong Minh Tuan, who served first as Son's deputy and then replaced him in the role until he was suspended last July, was charged with the same crimes. Son admitted receiving a 3-million-dollar bribe as a kickback for facilitating a now-cancelled deal in which the mobile carrier MobiFone acquired a 95 % stake in pay TV firm AVG, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported, citing police.

Son, at the time information minister, approved the acquisition without approval from the prime minister's office. Tuan, who as his deputy signed off on the decision, admitted receiving a 200,000-dollar bribe from AVG former chairman Nhat Vu, the Tuoi Tre report said.

The deal was found to have caused a 307-million-dollar hole in Vietnam's budget. Former MobiFone chairman Le Nam Tra, who was arrested in July last year and charged with violating regulations of state capital management, admitted receiving a 2.5-million-dollar bribe from Vu, the police run newspaper Cong An Nhan Dan reported.

Vu was arrested in April for allegedly offering bribes, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement. Vietnam has seen a corruption crackdown in the past year under the leadership of Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Major players in state-owned enterprises, including oil executives, have been convicted.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the execution of a second inmate by nitrogen gas, months after the state became the first state to put a person to death with the previously untested method. Justices granted Attorney General Steve Marshall’s request for an execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt.

North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. The defense argued for life in prison without parole, saying Thursday morning that Elders’ actions came after a lifetime of drug addiction and going in and out of jails and prisons, being kicked out of his family home as a teenager and not receiving support from family members.

Four More Prisoners Executed in Iran

Authorities of the Islamic Republic executed four more prisoners over the weekend as death penalties continue to rise in the country. The Iran Human Rights Organization reported that three inmates were executed on April 27 in Tabriz Prison for drug-related offenses. The inmates were identified as Amir Moharrami, 36, Davoud Namyari, 33, and Sohrab Hokmabad.
