Activists Call on President Biden to End the Federal Death Penalty Before Leaving Office

Biden’s election campaign in 2020 had pledged to end the federal death penalty and incentivize the remaining 27 states that still allow executions to do the same. While he made history as the first president in the United States to openly oppose the death penalty, there has been no movement to actually end federal executions during his nearly four years in office.

Accused 9/11 Mastermind Seeking Way Out of Death Penalty

The accused mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, has, in order to avoid the death penalty, offered to provide testimony regarding his role in the worst act of terrorism in modern US history. 

Mohammed has reportedly agreed to give a deposition to lawyers representing individuals and businesses who are suing Saudi Arabia for billions of dollars in damages due to the Muslim kingdom’s alleged backing of the perpetrators. 

Riyadh has denied any involvement in orchestrating the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people when terrorists deliberately crashed civilian airplanes into New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon located near Washington, D.C. 

Another aircraft went down in a Pennsylvania field after passengers attempted to retake control of the airliner, which might have been targeting the White House. 

Attorneys said that four other terrorists – two of whom, along with Mohammed, remain detained in Guantanamo Bay prison – had expressed a willingness to allow authorities to question them in the future. 

According to a letter filed in the US District Court in Manhattan, while Mohammed is not agreeing to talk “at the present time… in the absence of a potential death sentence much broader cooperation would be possible.” 

Fifteen out of the 19 al-Qaeda members responsible for the attacks were Saudi citizens. 

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump this week signed a bill ensuring that a compensation fund for 9/11 victims never runs dry, ending years of political gridlock as the number of first responders dying of Ground Zero-related illnesses continues to rise.

The following document is a written record of convicted killer Hamida Djandoubi's last moments before he was guillotined in a Marseilles prison on September 10, 1977. This written record -- dated September 9 -- was written by a judge appointed to witness the execution. Saudi regime achieves record executions number of opponents during first half of this year

SANA'A September 07. 2024 (Saba) - With the aim of suppressing opponents of the Al Saud regime, the intensity of executions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has escalated sharply in the first half of this year, with an increase of 42 percent over the same period last year. In the latest execution of opponents of the Al Saud regime witnessed by the Kingdom, the death sentence was carried out against Abdul Majeed al-Nimr (59 years old) last Saturday. Public execution in Saudi Arabia (file photo) A Saudi newspaper has carried a film showing the beheading of a man convicted of raping a teenaged boy before murdering him in the heart of the desert. The rare and shocking 51-second film showed the executioner bringing down his sword on the defendant’s head, which was severed in just a split of second. The executioner, a tall man wearing traditional Saudi dishdasha (gown) and ghutra (head cover), then wiped blood off his sword with a piece of cloth after the beheading before walking away from the rapist’s headless body. Sharq newspaper, which published the film, did not say how it was shot as filming of executions in the conservative Gulf kingdom is banned. Newspapers said the unnamed defendant had been convicted of abducting the Saudi boy to a desolate desert area and raping him. India | Supreme Court mulls guidelines to address delays in execution of death row convicts

Expressing concern over the agonising indefinite delays in execution of death row convicts, the Supreme Court has indicated that it’s mulling issuing certain guidelines to address the issue. “Possibly, it is time for us to lay down the procedure as to what the public prosecutor has to do when mercy petitions of convicts against the death sentence are rejected. This situation cannot continue. There has to be a procedure as to how the prosecutor and court have to react,” a three-judge Bench led by Justice AS Oka said.
