Activists Call on President Biden to End the Federal Death Penalty Before Leaving Office

A conversation with Death Penalty Action Co-founder and Executive Director Abe Bonowitz. Now that Joe Biden is a lame duck president, activists are holding him accountable to make good on his promise to end the federal death penalty during his remaining six months as president. Biden’s election campaign in 2020 had pledged to end the federal death penalty and incentivize the remaining 27 states that still allow executions to do the same. While he made history as the first president in the United States to openly oppose the death penalty, there has been no movement to actually end federal executions during his nearly four years in office.

Ohio: Kasich Grants Clemency To Condemned Killer Arthur Tyler

Arthur Tyler
Ohio Gov. John Kasich has granted clemency to a condemned killer who was scheduled to die next month for killing a Cleveland produce vendor.

Kasich's decision follows Tuesday's recommendation by the Ohio Parole Board in favor of mercy for Arthur Tyler, whose attorneys argue he is innocent in the 1983 shooting of Sander Leach.

Kasich reduced Tyler's sentence to life without the possibility of parole, rejecting requests that Tyler be made eligible for parole for possible release.

Tyler's lawyers say his co-defendant, Leroy Head, took responsibility for the shooting several times. Cuyahoga County prosecutors dispute Tyler's innocence but also pushed for clemency, saying the case doesn't meet current standards for capital punishment.

The 54-year-old Tyler was scheduled to die May 28.
