Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Georgia Supreme Court Stays Warren Lee Hill's Planned Execution

Jackson, Ga. (AP) — Ga. Supreme Court stays Monday's planned execution of death row inmate Warren Lee Hill.

The Georgia Supreme Court has unanimously granted a stay of execution to a man convicted of killing a fellow inmate.

Warren Lee Hill had been scheduled to be executed Monday at 7 p.m. at the state penitentiary at Jackson. But the high court said in a statement it was staying the execution so it could consider an appeal by the inmate over Georgia's recent switch to a single-drug execution method.

Hill was convicted in the Aug. 17, 1990, beating death of Joseph Handspike. Hill was serving a life sentence at the time for the shooting death of his 18-year-old girlfriend.

Hill's lawyers, among other issues, had challenged the state's recent switch from a three-drug lethal injection to a one-drug method. The change was announced days ago by state authorities.

Iraq executes 13 on ‘vague’ terrorism charges

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Wednesday criticized Iraqi authorities for carrying out the death sentences of 13 men on the same day, saying the prisoners were denied fair trial, and expressed concern that many others had been executed in secret. A total of 13 prisoners were executed in Dhi Qars Nasiriyah central prison on Monday, and scores more have been executed since April 10, said the Amnesty report citing activists and lawyers of the death row prisoners.
