Activists Call on President Biden to End the Federal Death Penalty Before Leaving Office

A conversation with Death Penalty Action Co-founder and Executive Director Abe Bonowitz. Now that Joe Biden is a lame duck president, activists are holding him accountable to make good on his promise to end the federal death penalty during his remaining six months as president. Biden’s election campaign in 2020 had pledged to end the federal death penalty and incentivize the remaining 27 states that still allow executions to do the same. While he made history as the first president in the United States to openly oppose the death penalty, there has been no movement to actually end federal executions during his nearly four years in office.

Iran: Two executed in public in the city of Babol

Iran Human Rights, October 5: Two prisoners were hanged publicly in the city of Babol (northern Iran) today.

According to the state run Iranian news agency Fars the prisoners were identified as "M. S." (37) and "A. T." (33), convicted of murdering four members of a family in Babol.

The execution was carried our this morning in the "Shahar Niai" Boulevard of Babol. A family member of the offended carried out the executions.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) strongly condemns today’s executions. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the spokesperson of IHR said: "We also condemn the Iranian authorities for using the family of the offended, who already have suffered from loss of their loved ones, to conduct the executions. This is nothing else than promoting a culture of murder and brutality in the society".

The following document is a written record of convicted killer Hamida Djandoubi's last moments before he was guillotined in a Marseilles prison on September 10, 1977. This written record -- dated September 9 -- was written by a judge appointed to witness the execution. Djandoubi's execution was the last execution carried out in France before capital punishment was abolished in 1981. Then-President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who had voiced his "loathing for the death penalty" before he was elected to office, flatly turned down Djandoubi's appeal for clemency and chose to let "Justice run its course", as he did on two previous instances ( Christian Ranucci , executed on July 28, 1976 and Jérôme Carrein , executed on June 23, 1977). Saudi regime achieves record executions number of opponents during first half of this year

SANA'A September 07. 2024 (Saba) - With the aim of suppressing opponents of the Al Saud regime, the intensity of executions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has escalated sharply in the first half of this year, with an increase of 42 percent over the same period last year. In the latest execution of opponents of the Al Saud regime witnessed by the Kingdom, the death sentence was carried out against Abdul Majeed al-Nimr (59 years old) last Saturday. He is a father of four children from Qatif, a province inhabited by a Shiite majority located in the east of the Kingdom, after he was convicted of joining a "terrorist cell affiliated with Al-Qaeda", according to the Saudi media.

Idaho death row inmate Thomas Creech claims second execution attempt would violate Eighth Amendment

The execution of Thomas Creech failed in February when a prison medical team was unable to establish an IV line to carry out the lethal injection. Saudi Arabia | Execution caught on video

Public execution in Saudi Arabia (file photo) A Saudi newspaper has carried a film showing the beheading of a man convicted of raping a teenaged boy before murdering him in the heart of the desert. The rare and shocking 51-second film showed the executioner bringing down his sword on the defendant’s head, which was severed in just a split of second. The executioner, a tall man wearing traditional Saudi dishdasha (gown) and ghutra (head cover), then wiped blood off his sword with a piece of cloth after the beheading before walking away from the rapist’s headless body. Sharq newspaper, which published the film, did not say how it was shot as filming of executions in the conservative Gulf kingdom is banned. Newspapers said the unnamed defendant had been convicted of abducting the Saudi boy to a desolate desert area and raping him. India | Supreme Court mulls guidelines to address delays in execution of death row convicts

Expressing concern over the agonising indefinite delays in execution of death row convicts, the Supreme Court has indicated that it’s mulling issuing certain guidelines to address the issue. “Possibly, it is time for us to lay down the procedure as to what the public prosecutor has to do when mercy petitions of convicts against the death sentence are rejected. This situation cannot continue. There has to be a procedure as to how the prosecutor and court have to react,” a three-judge Bench led by Justice AS Oka said.

An art exhibit reckons with Alabama’s death penalty toll

The state of Alabama executed Gary Brown more than two decades ago for his connection to a fatal stabbing. But at a recent Sunday service in Birmingham, you could hear him preaching. In the bustling foyer of the Unitarian Universalist Church, an archival recording of one of Brown’s sermons in prison thrummed under patrons’ lively chatter. Visitors stood with their necks craned back, reading rows of letters fixed to a wall. The display was part of an art exhibit that’s been traveling through Alabama this summer. Using art and archival materials, “The Art of Resistance: Documenting Alabama’s Death Row” aims to spark conversations about the state’s use of capital punishment.

Florida executes Loran Cole

Florida executes man convicted of killing college student, raping victim’s sister in national forest  A Florida man convicted of killing a college freshman and raping the murder victim’s older sister while the siblings camped in a national forest 30 years ago was executed Thursday.  Loran Cole, 57, received a lethal injection and was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. at Florida State Prison for the 1994 killing of the 18-year-old student. Cole also was serving t2life sentences for rape.
