Before it is too late Biden must turn words into deeds on the death penalty

Doing so would be a vindication not only of his announced anti-death penalty position but also of his Catholic faith .

Iran | Executions in Ilam, Zahedan, Isfahan, Roudan

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Ilam Central Prison on January 18. His identity has been established as 30-year-old Ghodrat Zeibrom who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “He was arrested three years ago.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Man Secretly Executed for Drug Offences in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 18, 2023:  Akbar Shehbakhsh, a Baluch man sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was secretly executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was secretly executed in Zahedan Central Prison on January 14. His identity has been reported as 28-year-old Akbar Shehbakhsh (Darouzehi) who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

An informed source was quoted as saying: “Akbar was arrested for drug charges in 2019 and sentenced to death by the Zahedan Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Mahgoli two years ago.”

His execution was carried out without his family or lawyer being notified and the right to a last visit.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Omid Karimi Executed for Murder in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 18, 2023: Omid Karimi who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, has been executed in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on January 18. His identity has been established as Omid Karimi, an Isfahan native who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Omid Karimi was arrested for murder around four years ago and sentenced to qisas. He was transferred to solitary confinement from Ward 4 of the prison.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Afghan Mirajan Mohammadi Secretly Executed for Drug Offences in Roudan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 17, 2023:  Mirajan Mohammadi, an Afghan national sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was secretly executed in Roudan Prison in Hormozgan.

According to Hal Vash, an Afghan national was secretly executed in Roudan Prison on January 9. His identity has been reported as Mirajan Mohammadi who was around 26.

An informed source was quoted as saying: “Mirajan was arrested for drug-related charges over two years ago and sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in Roudan. He was executed on January 9 without his family being notified and a last visit.”

Nazir Sorkhkaman was also reported to have been executed at the prison that day.

At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
