Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Iran | 8 Inmates Executed in Shiraz, Birjand and Ardabil, 70-year-old prisoner executed in Hamadan

On November 5, 2022, in Shiraz, Adel-Abad prison officials executed 3 inmates. 2 have been identified as Amir Ghoncheh and Jafar Tourjan, who were convicted of drug-related crimes.

Also, Haal Vsh reported the execution of 4 inmates convicted of drug-related crimes in Birjand Prison on Wednesday, November 2. They have been identified as Noor-Ahmad Tonzahi, Abdollah Tonazehi, Mohammad Khoshhal and Khosravi (first name unknown).

Iran Human Rights Organization reported the execution of an inmate identified as Mehdi Tazakori in Ardabil. According to an informed source, he was sentenced to death for killing his wife 4 years ago.

None of these executions has been reported by official sources and media outlets inside Iran so far.

70-year-old prisoner executed in Hamadan


The death sentence of a 70-year-old prisoner named Janali Gholamhosseini carried out in Hamedan prison on drug charges.

An informed source told Iranian Human Rights Society: “Janali Gholamhosseini 70 years old and taken from adult prison for execution.” “He was in prison for 3 years and yesterday he had his last visit with his family.”

Execution of 4 prisoners in Birjand prison


According to Haalvash report on the morning of Wednesday, November 2, 2022, four prisoners named Nur Ahmad Totazahi from Zahedan, Abdullah Totazahi (Rigi) from Zahedan. Mohammad Khushal from Zabul and (unknown first name) Khosravi from Zabul executed in Birjand prison on drug charges.

In this report, an informed source is quoted. “Abdullah and Noor Ahmad arrested in Birjand in May 2020 in a joint case on charges related to drugs. And Mohammad Khushal and Khosravi were arrested in separate cases in 2019.”

Execution of a prisoner in Ardabil


According to the Iranian Human Rights Organization, dawn on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. A prisoner named Mehdi Tadzari, sentenced to death for murder, executed in Ardabil Central Prison.

In this report, quoting an informed source, Mehdi Tadzkiri arrested 4 years ago on charge of murdering his wife and sentenced to retribution. He went to the gallows from a ward of Ardabil prison and the plaintiffs refused to give consent.

With the efficiency of Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and Ebrahim Raisi, the speed of executions has increased shockingly. Earlier in a circular, the judiciary demanded to speed up the execution of sentences.

Including the execution of these 6 prisoners in Hamadan, Birjand and Ardabil prisons. The number of executions since the beginning of 2022 has reached a shocking number of 500.

This is while the actual number of executions is more than this number. And many executions carried out secretly and no one knows about it.

Four More Prisoners Executed in Iran

Authorities of the Islamic Republic executed four more prisoners over the weekend as death penalties continue to rise in the country. The Iran Human Rights Organization reported that three inmates were executed on April 27 in Tabriz Prison for drug-related offenses. The inmates were identified as Amir Moharrami, 36, Davoud Namyari, 33, and Sohrab Hokmabad.
