As clock ticks toward another Trump presidency, federal death row prisoners appeal for clemency

President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Iran | Man Executed for Drug Offences in Zabol, 2 Executed for Drug Offences in Qom, Man Executed for Murder in Shiraz, Man Executed for Drug Offences in Zahedan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); July 7, 2022: Zarif Kakar, a Baluch man sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was executed in Zabol Prison.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, a Baluch man was executed in Zabol Prison on the morning of July 7. His identity has been reported as Zarif Kakar who was from the Karim Abad region in Zahedan and had been sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 251 including 6 women and 67 Baluch minorities were executed in the first six months of 2022. This is double the number of executions in the same period in 2021 when 117 people were executed.

Abolfazl Rahmani and Mehrollah Rigi Executed for Drug Offences in Qom


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); July 10, 2022: Abolfazl Rahmani and Mehrollah Rigi sentenced to death for drug-related charges, were executed in Qom Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Qom Central Prison on the morning of July 9. Their identities have been established as 38-year-old Abolfazl Rahmani and 40-year-old Mehrollah Rigi who were sentenced to death for drug-related charges by the Revolutionary Court.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Abolfazl Rahman was arrested for drug offences four years ago and sentenced to death. He was a crane driver prior to arrest and had a child.”

“Mehrollah Rigi was from Zahedan and had been arrested for drug offences three years ago. He was arrested with another person whose death sentence was commuted to 15 years imprisonment last year but Mehrollah was executed as the first defendant in the case,” the source added.

According to Hal Vash which first reported Mehrollah Rigi’s execution, he was a Baluch minority.

The two prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions with two others who were returned to their cells after obtaining extensions in their murder cases.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Fardin Zekri Executed for Murder in Shiraz


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); July 9, 2022: Fardin Zekri, a man sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Shiraz Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Shiraz Central Prison on July 6. His identity has been established as 34-year-old Fardin Zekri from Kashan who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Fardin Zekri was arrested for murder charges over a financial dispute 42 months ago. He worked at a greenhouse prior to arrest.”

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 183 people were executed on murder charges in 2021. Those charged with the umbrella term of “intentional murder” are sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) regardless of intent or circumstances due to a lack of grading in law. Once a defendant has been convicted, the victim’s family are required to choose between death as retribution, diya (blood money) or forgiveness.

Baluch Behzad Narouyi Executed for Drug Offences in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); July 7, 2022: Behzad Narouyi, a Baluch man sentenced to death for drug-related charges, was executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of July 7. His identity has been reported as 33-year-old Behzad Narouyi.

Behzad Narouyi was a taxi driver in Zahedan at the time of his arrest in 2018 and sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
