Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Iran | Unidentified Man Executed for Murder in Shiraz, 2 Executed on Drug Charges in Zahedan, Mashhad

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 4, 2022: An unidentified man who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Shiraz Central Prison.

According to Hrana newsagency, a man was executed in Shiraz Central Prison on the morning of February 1. The 36-year-old man whose identity has not been established, was sentenced to qisas for murder.

According to informed sources, the executed man was unable to afford the diya (blood money) set by the victim’s family.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Man Executed on Drug Charges in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 4, 2022: Hafizollah Barahouyi, a Baluch man sentenced to death on drug-related charges, has been executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of February 3. Identified as Hafizollah Barahouyi, he had been sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

Hafizollah’s family had said their goodbyes to him in their last visit on February 1.

At the time of writing, Hafizollah’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.

Man Executed on Drug Charges in Mashhad


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); February 4, 2022: Najibollah Gargij, a Baluch man sentenced to death on drug-related charges was executed in Mashhad Central Prison.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, a Baluch man was executed in Mashhad Central Prison on the morning of February 3. His identity has been established as Najibollah Gargij who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

At the time of writing, Najibollah’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
