Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Iran | Prisoners Executed on Drug Charges in Urmia, Zahedan

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 27, 2022: 68-year-old Mirsoltan Amiri was executed on drug-related charges in Urmia Central Prison. His son was executed at the prison last summer.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Urmia Central Prison on the morning of January 27. His identity has been established as 68-year-old Mirsoltan Amiri from Ashnavieh who was sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

Speaking to Iran Human Rights, an informed source said: “Mirsoltan Amiri’s son was called Shahriar Amiri and they were sentenced to death as part of the same case. Shahriar was executed in Urmia Prison last summer. They had been behind bars for around five years.”

At the time of writing, Mirsoltan’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.

Nasser Sohrabzehi Executed for Drug Offences in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 30, 2022: Nasser Sohrabzehi, a Baluch man sentenced to death on drug-related charges, has been executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of January 29. His identity has been reported as Nasser Sohrabzehi from the village of Sohrab Abad who had been sentenced to death for drug-related offences.

Nasser had been behind bars for the last five years after being arrested in Zahedan city.

At the time of writing, Nasser’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

7 Prisoners Hanged in Rasht, Maragheh, Zahedan, and Urmia


On Monday morning, January 31, 2022, the clerical regime hanged Hossein Kaveh, 50, in Lakan (Rasht) Prison after 9 years in prison.

On Sunday, January 30, the regime hanged 2 young prisoners, Mehrdad (Akbar) Karimpour, 32, and Farid Mohammadi, after serving 6 years in Maragheh Prison. 

On Saturday, January 29, 2 Baluch prisoners, Nasser Sohrab Zehi and Mohammad Reza Afridon, 32, were executed in Zahedan Prison.

On January 28, 2 other prisoners were hanged in Urmia Prison. One of them was 70-year-old Mir Sultan Amiri from Oshnavieh, whose son, Shahriar Amiri, had previously been executed in the same prison on July 3, this year.

The Iranian Resistance draws the attention of the United Nations and all its relevant organizations, the European Union, and its member states to the dramatic rise in executions, especially since Ebrahim Raisi became president. It also calls for urgent action to save the lives of death row prisoners, especially political prisoners.
