Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 14, 2022: According to state media, two men sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (enmity against god) for setting fire to a petrol station in Darreh Garm and killing two policemen, have been executed.
According to Mehr news agency, two men sentenced to death on charges of moharebeh (enmity against god) for setting fire to a petrol station in Darreh Garm and killing two policemen, have been executed.
The report does not specify the exact date and location of the executions but it seems to have taken place in Lorestan province.
Their identities have also not been revealed in the report but previous reports named the two defendents in this case as Jahanbakhsh Abbasi and Mehran Naghdi.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new Lorestan Prison Organisation Director on 16 December 2019, the Lorestan Chief Justice, Mohammad Razm broke the news that the two perpetrators of the Khorramabad petrol station explosion had been arrested and said: “These individuals were expelled from the military forces and had been rebought.”
The Darreh Garm petrol station fire took place on 6 February 2019.
Due to their vague definitions, the security charges of moharebeh (enmity against God), efsad-fil-arz (corruption on Earth) and baghy (armed rebellion) are used for a wide range of offences. Additionally, as they are within the Revolutionary Courts’ jurisdiction, there is considerable subjectivity in the judgements made in the cases.
Efsad-fil-arz has been used by Revolutionary Court judges, particularly in cases where a death sentence would otherwise be difficult to justify based on other charges and irrefutable evidence.
In 2020, at least 15 people were executed on charges of moharebeh, efsad-fil-arz and baghy. This is an increase from 2019, when 9 were executed on the same charges.
Those executed on security charges include members of opposition groups and religious minorities. Dissident journalist, Ruhollah Zam was also executed on efsad-fil-arz charges on 12 December 2020.
