Iran | Man Executed over Drug Charges in Isfahan, 2 Executed for Murder in Khorramabad

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 21, 2022: Afghan national Eshagh Mohammadamin who was sentenced to death for drug-related charges and qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed on the former charges in Isfahan Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, an Afghan man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on the morning of January 20. His identity has been established as Eshagh Mohammadamin from Mazare Sharif. He was sentenced to death for drug-related charges and qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Eshagh Mohammadamin had been behind bars for five years. He was charged with shooting a soldier while carrying drugs, and he was executed for the drug charges yesterday.”

At the time of writing, Eshagh’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.

Eghbal Mastoufi and Houshang Khan Mohammadi Executed in Khorramabad


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 21, 2022: Co-defendants Eghbal Mastoufi and Houshang Khan Mohammadi were executed on murder charges in Khorramabad Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Khorramabad Central Prison on the morning of January 19. Their identities have been established as Eghbal Mastoufi and Houshang Khan Mohammadi, sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder in the same case.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Eghbal and Houshang were behind bars for four years as the first and second defendant in the same case. They were charged with the murder of their friend through poisoned cake.”

At the time of writing, Eghbal and Houshang’s executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
