Iran | Executions in Karaj, Zahedan, Qom

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 17, 2022: An unidentified man was executed in Karaj Central Prison after being sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder.

According to Rokna, a man was executed in Karaj Central Prison. His identity and date of execution have not been revealed in the report.

The executed man was sentenced to qisas for “murder and sexual harassment”, according to the report.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Abdolbaset Rigi Executed for Murder in Zahedan


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 17, 2022: Abdolbaset Rigi, a Baluch man sentenced to two counts of qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder and collaboration with an opposition group, has been executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According Hal Vash, a Baluch man was executed in Zahedan Central Prison on the morning of January 17. His identity has been revealed as 33-year-old Abdolbaset Rigi who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

The report states: “Abdobaset Rigi was charged with murdering Judge Karimi (who was killed in Saravan 12 years ago) and setting fire to an Iran Cell telecommunication tower in Saravan, as well as complicity in the murder of Sheikh Ali Dehvari, and collaborating with opposition groups and carrying a pistol.”

Abdulbaset Rigi was sentenced to two counts of qisas for the murder of Judge Karimi and being complicit in the murder of Sheikh Ali Dehvari, 25 years imprisonment for collaborating with opposition groups, 10 years imprisonement for burning the telecommunications tower and five year for carrying the pistol.

At the time of writing, Abdulbaset’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Valijan Rahmi Executed for Drug Offences in Qom


Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); January 17, 2022: Valijan Rahmi who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges, has been executed in Qom Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Qom Central Prison on the morning of January 17. His identity has been established as 56-year-old Valijan Rahmi who was held in Ward 3 of the prison prior to his execution.

An informed source told Iran Human Rights: “Valijan Rahmi was from Shabestar and was arrested for drug offences around seven years ago and sentenced to death. He sold cigarettes prior to his arrest.”

At the time of writing, Valijan’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020.

On December 10, Iran Human Rights warned again of the rise in drug-related executions, which is now at a four-year record high and called on the international community for a prompt reaction.
