Iran Human Rights (IHR); September 13, 2021: IHR previously reported that three unidentified men had been executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on September 8. Newly obtained information reveals that a further man and three women were also executed at the prison on that day.
According to new information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a total of seven people were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on September 8. As well as the previously reported three men who were executed on murder charges, another man and three women were also executed at the prison that day.
The man who has been identified as Abdulrahim Khani, was sentenced to death on drug-related charges. He had been transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison from Ghezelhesar Prison, and had been kept in Ward 2, known as Dar al-Quran prior to his execution. Informed sources told IHR that AbdulKarim Khani had been sentenced to death for “a tonne and a half of heroine.”
The charges against the three women have not yet been established and it is unknown which prison they had been transferred from.
“The three women were executed hours after the men were executed and they were most probably convicted of murder,” informed sources told IHR.
At the time of writing, official sources have only announced the execution of one prisoner charged with murder. According to Tabnak website, he had been charged with murder in the course of a fake accident.
According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder." One case of qassameh was recorded by IHR in 2020.
As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of the intent and circumstances.
