USA | Biden needs to act on growing anti-death penalty sentiments

The flattening of public discourse — political, social, moral and ethical — into a simplistic left-right binary is a disturbing trend that too few of us push back against. People are encouraged to live in their echo chambers through news outlets tailored to confirm their worldviews and social media feeds custom-designed to reinforce their biases. This polarized discourse has created a false narrative around the death penalty that relies on simplistic and overgeneralized notions of our country’s partisan divide. It is a narrative that, while easy to communicate, ignores the diversity of voices expressing serious concerns about how the death penalty operates in America. For instance, the authors of this op-ed belie that simplicity. One of us is a former Democratic U.S. senator from Wisconsin, a state that has not had the death penalty since 1853, and who has worked tirelessly throughout his public life to end the death penalty. The other is the former Republican-appointed United States a

Iran | 4 Men and 3 Unidentified Women Executed in Rajai Shahr Prison, Prisoner Executed in Iranshahr Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHR); September 13, 2021: IHR previously reported that three unidentified men had been executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on September 8. Newly obtained information reveals that a further man and three women were also executed at the prison on that day.

According to new information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a total of seven people were executed in Rajai Shahr Prison on September 8. As well as the previously reported three men who were executed on murder charges, another man and three women were also executed at the prison that day.

The man who has been identified as Abdulrahim Khani, was sentenced to death on drug-related charges. He had been transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison from Ghezelhesar Prison, and had been kept in Ward 2, known as Dar al-Quran prior to his execution. Informed sources told IHR that AbdulKarim Khani had been sentenced to death for “a tonne and a half of heroine.”

The charges against the three women have not yet been established and it is unknown which prison they had been transferred from.

“The three women were executed hours after the men were executed and they were most probably convicted of murder,” informed sources told IHR.

At the time of writing, official sources have only announced the execution of one prisoner charged with murder. According to Tabnak website, he had been charged with murder in the course of a fake accident.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder." One case of qassameh was recorded by IHR in 2020.

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of the intent and circumstances.
