As clock ticks toward another Trump presidency, federal death row prisoners appeal for clemency

President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Iran | Two Inmates Executed in Qom, Man Executed on Drug Charges in Isfahan

Co-defendants Mohammad Hassan Eghdami and Ebrahim Afrashteh who were sentenced to death on drug-related charges, have been executed in Qom Central Prison. 

At least 60 prisoners, including a woman, have been executed on drug-related charges in Iranian prisons in 2021.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Qom Central Prison on the morning of August 4. 

The identities of the men who were sentenced to death in the same drug-related case, has been established as Mohammad Hassan Eghdami and Ebrahim Afrashteh.

“They were arrested 6 years ago and sentenced to death. 

Mohmmad Hassan had a child and had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution last year and again earlier this year, but for some reason it was not carried out and he was returned to his cell,” an informed source has told IHR.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020. 

However, at least 45 people have so far been executed on the same charge in 2021.

On May 3, IHR published a report on the death penalty in the first 4 months of 2021 expressing concern at the significant increase in the number of drug-related executions and continues to warn of the continuation of this trend.

Arsalan Karimi Executed on Drug Charges in Isfahan


Arsalan Karimi who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges has been executed in Isfahan Central Prison. At least 61 people have now been executed on drug charges in 2021.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Isfahan Central Prison on the morning of August 2. His identity has been established as Arsalan Karimi who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

Informed sources have told IHR that Arsalan was a married father of 2 and a Kermanshah native.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
