As clock ticks toward another Trump presidency, federal death row prisoners appeal for clemency

President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office is putting a spotlight on the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, which houses federal death row. In Bloomington, a small community of death row spiritual advisors is struggling to support the prisoners to whom they minister.  Ross Martinie Eiler is a Mennonite, Episcopal lay minister and member of the Catholic Worker movement, which assists the homeless. And for the past three years, he’s served as a spiritual advisor for a man on federal death row.

Iran | Executions carried out in Mashhad, Kerman, Kermanshah

Iran Human Rights (IHR); August 9, 2021: A Baluch prisoner named Zabiollah Hormozi who was sentenced to death on drug-related charges has been executed in Mashhad Central Prison. 

At least 64 people have now been executed on drug charges in 2021.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, a Baluch men were executed on drug charges in Mashhad Central Prison today. His identity been established as Zahedan-native Zabiollah Hormozi, also known as Mehrollah Sanjarani.

He is reported to have been arrested 18 months ago on drug charges in Birjand and transferred to Mashhad Central Prison.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty in Iran, at least 25 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2020. However, at least 64 people have so far been executed on the same charge in 2021.

On May 3, IHR published a report on the death penalty in the first four months of 2021 expressing concern at the significant increase in the number of drug-related executions and continues to warn of the continuation of this trend.

Ebrahim Ghanbarzehi and Nabi Notizehi Executed in Kerman


Iran Human Rights (IHR); August 9, 2021: Ebrahim Ghanbarzehi and Nabi Notizehi, two Baluch men sentenced to death on drug-related charges were executed in Kerman Central Prison. At least 63 prisoners, including a woman, have been executed on drug-related charges in Iranian prisons in 2021.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign, two Baluch men were executed on drug charges in Kerman Central Prison today. Their identities have been established as Ebrahim Ghanbarzehi and Nabi Notizehi, both from Zahedan.

Ebrahim Ghanbarzehi and Nabi Notizehi are reported to have been detained on drug-related charges in Kerman five years ago. This is while they were not in possession of any drugs at the time of their arrest.

According to Resanak Telegram channel, the two men were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions on August 7 and were executed at 7am this morning.

At the time of writing, their executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Afshar Minayi Executed in Kermanshah


Iran Human Rights (IHR); August 9, 2021: A prisoner named Afshar Minayi who was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, has been executed in Kermanshah Central Prison.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was executed in Kermanshah Central Prison this morning, August 9. His identity has been established as Afshar Minayi who was sentenced to qisas for murder.

“Mr Minayi was from a village in Paveh and was a father of two children, a son and a daughter. He had been in prison for murder for the last five years,” an informed source told IHR.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
