The Moratorium On Federal Executions Highlights Need To Abolish The Death Penalty, Once And For All

"If the DOJ review is as narrow as the memorandum suggests—i.e., it addresses only the things the Trump administration did to expedite executions and expand the methods available to kill federal prisoners—it barely even scratches the surface of death penalty reform. Simply put, if the administration doesn't repeal or commute, it isn't taking steps to end the federal death penalty. It may be making reforms, but it isn't fulfilling the Biden campaign pledge." — Robert Dunham, Executive Director, Death Penalty Information Center.

Responding to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland imposing a moratorium on federal executions while the Justice Department reviews its policies and procedures on capital punishment, Kristina Roth, the Senior Advocate for Criminal Justice Programs at Amnesty International USA, said:

“The moratorium on federal executions is a welcome first step, but more must be done immediately to stop the use of the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, including commuting all federal sentences. President Biden has the constitutional authority to commute all federal death sentences and must do so to help move the US closer to meeting its human rights obligations. A moratorium may provide respite for those on federal death row now but can be easily undone by a future administration with a different perspective on the ultimate punishment.

“Just days after the 49th anniversary of Furman v. Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that led to a nation-wide moratorium on executions, the death penalty is still arbitrary, racially biased, and riddled with errors. The death penalty is beyond repair and must be abolished. Regardless of who is accused, the nature or circumstances of the crime, guilt or innocence or method of execution, the death penalty violates everyone’s right to be free from cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment. Its usage is irreversible and the risk of executing an innocent person by mistake can never be eliminated.

“It’s well past time for the United States federal government to abolish the death penalty once and for all, following the leadership already exhibited by 24 states in the USA and the majority of countries around the world.”

Amnesty International believes the the death penalty should be abolished around the world.

Burkina Faso to bring back death penalty

Burkina Faso's military rulers will bring back the death penalty, which was abolished in 2018, the country's Council of Ministers announced on Thursday. Mark Allen Geralds was convicted of killing a mother of two in Panama City Beach The state of Florida executed 58-year-old Mark Allen Geralds at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Florida State Prison, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. He was convicted of the 1989 murder of a Bay County mother. Gov. Ron DeSantis on Nov. 7 signed a death warrant for Geralds. Geralds' last words were “I’m sorry that I missed you [unintelligible]. I love you everyday,” according to witness and journalist John Koch. Geralds was convicted of first-degree murder, armed robbery, burglary and grand theft auto in 1990. Shortly after his death warrant was signed, he waived his right to make any further appeals in court.

A woman in Dong Nai Province in southern Vietnam was sentenced to death on Thursday for killing family members including two young children in a series of cyanide poisonings that shocked her community. The Dong Nai People's Court found 39-year-old Nguyen Thi Hong Bich guilty of murder and of illegally possessing and using toxic chemicals. Iran carries out public hanging of "double-rapist"

Iran on Tuesday publicly executed a man after convicting him of raping two women in the northern province of Semnan. The execution was carried out in the town of Bastam after the Supreme Court upheld the verdict, the judiciary's official outlet Mizan Online reported. Mizan cited the head of the provincial judiciary, Mohammad Akbari, as saying the ruling had been 'confirmed and enforced after precise review by the Supreme Court'. The provincial authority said the man had 'deceived two women and committed rape by force and coercion', adding that he used 'intimidation and threats' to instil fear of reputational harm in the victims.
