Iran Human Rights (IHR); July 10, 2021: A 45-year-old death row prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed in Mashhad Central Prison on July 5. This is the second reported execution in the prison on that day.
According to the official Khorasan newspaper, a man was executed in Mashhad Central Prison on July 5. Sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for the murder of his wife on 9 August 2009, he has only been identified as 45-year-old Ali. P.
Ali is reported to have killed his wife with an ax after returning home with her from a family court over a dispute. They were both teachers at the time.
The newspaper had previously reported the executions of a 37-year-old man identified as M and a 70-years-old man identified as A.A in Mashhad Central Prison on June 30 and a 21-year-old only identified as Mehdi.G.
According to Iran Human Rights’ Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 211 of the 267 people executed in 2020 were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for "premeditated murder."
As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.
Farhad Najafi and Ali Ahmadi Executed on Same-sex Rape Charges in Maragheh
Iran Human Rights (IHR); July 8, 2021: Farhad Najafi and Ali Ahmadi who had been sentenced to death for the rape of a man, have been executed in Maragheh Prison.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Maragheh Prison on the morning of July 5.
Their identities have been established as 25-year-old Farhad Najafi and 23-year-old Ali Ahmadi and were arrested around three years ago.
Hrana news agency which first broke the news reported that they had been sentenced to death on rape charges.
At the time of writing, neither of their executions have been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.
The Islamic Penal Code sets the death penalty for rape charges.
At least 12 were executed on rape charges in 2020. In 2019, at least 16 people and in 2018, at least 23 people were executed on rape charges.
In cases involving rape, the likelihood of defendants being tortured to force a confession is very high.
Iran is one of the few remaining countries to issue the death penalty for rape.
