Iran | Man Executed for Being an Alcoholic

A prisoner was executed in Mashhad Central Prison for drinking alcohol yesterday. 

Once again, Iran Human Rights calls on the international community to pay more attention to the human rights abuses, and in particular, the execution of death sentences in Iran.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR said: "with this execution, the Islamic Republic's judicial system has once again proven that its views are no different from those of ISIS."

According to IHR, the prisoner sentenced to death for "drinking alcohol for the 6th time" was executed in Mashhad Central Prison, at dawn yesterday (July 9, 2020).

Hossein Habibi Shahri, the prisoner's lawyer, told IHR: "My client was arrested in 2016 or 17. He was convicted of drinking alcohol for the sixth time. Of course, there was also the issue of driving without a license and being in possession of alcohol."

At the time of publishing this article, the execution has not been announced by local media or official sources.

According to Article 179 of the Islamic Penal Code: " If a person consumes intoxicants several times and receives the hadd punishment after each time, on the 3rd occasion s/he shall be sentenced to the death penalty." (In sharia Islam, such crimes are considered to be against God, and their punishment specified by the Quran.

This is one of the few recorded executions for drinking alcohol. 

Due to the lack of transparency in the Islamic Republic's judiciary, most executions in Iran are not declared officially by the authorities.

Iran sentences popular rapper to death for supporting Mahsa Amini protests

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a popular rapper jailed for more than a year and a half for supporting nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death, local media reported Wednesday . "Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth," the singer's lawyer Amir Raisian said, quoted by the reformist Shargh newspaper.

PETALING JAYA: Amnesty International Malaysia has commended Malaysia for the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and for imposing a moratorium on the execution of the death sentence, which has led to an overall decrease in the use of the death penalty by the courts. ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Wednesday criticized Iraqi authorities for carrying out the death sentences of 13 men on the same day, saying the prisoners were denied fair trial, and expressed concern that many others had been executed in secret. Kansas - A judge has denied a request by death-row inmates Jonathan and Reginald Carr to be resentenced in a December 2000 crime spree that included five murders. The Carr brothers filed motions in November requesting a new hearing to determine whether the evidence supports the death penalty.
