Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

During the protest, held outside of IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, protesters piled stones painted in red to show that throwing stones can kill.

Parents who lost their sons and daughters during army service and Im Tirzu activists held a joint protest on Wednesday outside IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv following the death of St.-Sgt. Amit Ben Yigal.

Yigal was killed on Monday night during an operation in the West Bank when he was hit in the head by a rock. 

The protesters carried signs telling the High Court to “get off the battle field” and called on the IDF and other state agencies to be fiercer in the fight against terror, including using the death penalty.  

IDF soldiers had been searching for Yigal‘s killer in an ongoing effort to bring him to justice.  

The protesters piled stones, painted in red, to show that stone-throwing can be lethal. 

They called for changes in current Israeli policy, including the protocol for opening fire on enemy targets, the demolition of terrorists' homes and the deportation of family members of terrorists out of the country.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Amnesty International on Wednesday criticized Iraqi authorities for carrying out the death sentences of 13 men on the same day, saying the prisoners were denied fair trial, and expressed concern that many others had been executed in secret. A total of 13 prisoners were executed in Dhi Qars Nasiriyah central prison on Monday, and scores more have been executed since April 10, said the Amnesty report citing activists and lawyers of the death row prisoners.

A group of high profile political prisoners in Iran have denounced the death sentence handed down to dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi, calling it a sign of Iran's "inhuman nature and deep corruption." Footballer Josh Cavallo has revealed he would not compete in the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia if selected, due to the country’s anti-gay laws. It is illegal to be gay in Saudi Arabia, punishable by the death penalty. “I honestly wouldn’t feel safe,” Cavallo told The Mirror. “There’s certain countries I will not go to and play my club football or play with the national team. “At the end of the day, it comes to a point where it’s your livelihood over your job which for me is incredibly sad because this is what I do, I wake up and I breathe football, this is what I’m made for. “To know that I’m limited and stuck in certain countries because they don’t approve of how I love or how I live my life is quite saddening.
