Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Saudi Arabia Executes Yemeni Man Convicted of Stabbing Attack in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia on Thursday executed a Yemeni man identified as Imad al-Mansouri, previously convicted for his November 11 knife attack on a Spanish theater group in Riyadh, the country’s interior ministry revealed.

According to Arab News, Mansouri stabbed two people during the show. 

At least four people were left wounded in the attack, which took place in the King Abdullah Park venue during an entertainment festival. 

Mansouri has been linked to militant group Al-Qaeda by Saudi state media.

“Al-Mansouri is also accused of terrorizing people and causing chaos and terror amongst the audience, assigned by one of the leaders of Al-Qaeda terrorist organization in Yemen,” a statement by the Saudi interior ministry reads.

"The death sentence was carried out ... in Riyadh," the ministry added in the statement, which was released by the Saudi Press Agency and obtained by AFP.

The Saudi-run Al-Ekhbariya television station also alleges that Mansouri committed the attack on the orders of an Al-Qaeda leader in Yemen. 

However, there have been no claims of responsibility by any groups yet, AFP reported.

Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman has seemingly been attempting to modernize the conservative kingdom through such measures as lifting the ban on women drivers in 2018 and allowing concerts and sporting events in the country. 

However, Saudi Arabia’s modernization efforts have not affected its stance on the death penalty. 

The country in 2019 executed at least 187 people on death row, according to official data obtained by AFP. 

The previous highest number of people executed in the country was 195 in 1995. 

This year, 12 people have been executed in the country so far.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the execution of a second inmate by nitrogen gas, months after the state became the first state to put a person to death with the previously untested method. Justices granted Attorney General Steve Marshall’s request for an execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt.

North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. The defense argued for life in prison without parole, saying Thursday morning that Elders’ actions came after a lifetime of drug addiction and going in and out of jails and prisons, being kicked out of his family home as a teenager and not receiving support from family members.

Four More Prisoners Executed in Iran

Authorities of the Islamic Republic executed four more prisoners over the weekend as death penalties continue to rise in the country. The Iran Human Rights Organization reported that three inmates were executed on April 27 in Tabriz Prison for drug-related offenses. The inmates were identified as Amir Moharrami, 36, Davoud Namyari, 33, and Sohrab Hokmabad.
