Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

A Manikganj court on Wednesday sentenced death penalty to a man for burning a child after rape and murder at Daulatpur in Manikganj on October 20, 2018.

The Judge of Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Mohammad Ali Hossain handed down the verdict to Shahadat Hossain Sadhu, 35, son of Latif Sheikh, of Shyampur village of Daulatpur upazila, in presence of the accused at noon.

According to the verdict, accused Shahadat Hossain Sadhu took the child to an abandoned place at Shyampur village of Daulatpur on October 20 night and raped, killed her. 

Later, he burnt the child with petrol.

He was supposed to take her to her maternal grandmother’s home.

After the incident, the mother of the child filed a case with Daulatpur police station accusing Shahadat Hossain Sadhu.

Police later arrested Sadhu.

The investigating officer of the case sub-inspector Abdul Hai filed charge sheet before the court on May 13, 2019 against the accused.

After examining 15 witnesses, Judge Mohammad Ali Hossain declared the verdict, said AKM Nurul Huda Rubel, special public prosecutor of Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
