Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Iran: Two Men Hanged, Including One With Mental Disorder

According to IHR sources, death-row prisoner Mohammad Cheraghi was hanged on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Rajai-Shahr prison. 

He was sentenced to death for murder charges. 

The second prisoner who was identified by his first name, Mehrdad, was suffering from a mental disorder. He was also sentenced to death for murder charges.

Moreover,  other prisoners, including two Afghan nationals, were transferred to the “safe ward” of Rajai-Shahr prison. 

“Safe ward” is the name of a ward -more like solitary confinement- which death row prisoners are sent to shortly before the execution.

In 2019, most of the executions in Iran were carried out for murder charges. 

According to the Iranian Islamic Penal Code (IPC) murder is punishable by qisas which means “retribution in kind” or retaliation.

Two Drug-Related Executions in Qom


Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 21, 2020: Two prisoners were hanged on February 12, 2020, at the central prison of Qom, a city located around 140 km south of Tehran. 

Iranian authorities have not yet announced the executions.

According to IHR sources, on the morning of Wednesday, February 12, death-row prisoners Naeim Zavareh and Ali Dadkhah were hanged at Qom prison. 

They were sentenced to death for drug-related charges. “Naeim Zavareh and Ali Dadkhah were two of three co-defendants who were charged with drug-related offenses. Naeim and Ali received death sentences and the third was sentenced to an 11-year jail term.”

Three Men Hanged in Kermanshah


Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 19, 2020: Three prisoners were hanged on February 5 at the Iranian city of Kermanshah. 

Iranian authorities and media remain silent about the executions.

According to IHR sources, on the morning of Wednesday, February 5, 2020, three prisoners were hanged at Kermanshah prison -also known as Dizel-Abad prison. 

IHR could identify two as Shahab Naderi (22) and Borzu Ahmadi (38), both executed for murder charges. 

The details of the third executed prisoner is under investigation by IHR researchers. 

Hengaw website which was the first to reveal Borzu Mohammadi’s execution, mentioned that he was sentenced to death for murder four years ago.

Prisoner Hanged in Isfahan


Iran Human Rights (IHR); February 16, 2020: A death-row prisoner hanged at Isfahan prison on February 13, 2020.

According to IHR sources, death-row prisoner Hassan Saraei (36) was hanged on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Isfahan prison. 

“He was sentenced to death for murdering his friend four years ago,” a well-informed source told IHR.
