Iran Human Rights (IHR); August 5, 2019: Two prisoners were hanged at Dezful Prison on Mohrarebeh (waging war against God) charges Sunday.
According to the Iranian media, two prisoners belonging to Iranian Arab minorities were hanged at Dezful prison Sunday morning August 4.
An Iranian official told ISNA, “by forming a terrorist group, these people acted against the stability and security, committed murders, and bought arms. Four years ago, they shot dead two pilgrims in Dezful and wounded three.”
Local sources identified the executed prisoners as Abdullah Karmollah Chab and Ghassem Beit-Abdullah.
Amnesty International had previously reported: “confessions they have said were obtained under torture and other ill-treatment, including electric shocks and mock executions, were used to convict them. Their cases are before the Supreme Court.”
Abdullah Karmollah Chab and Ghassem Beit-Abdullah were arrested two years ago along with 7 others. Other co-defendants sentenced to life imprisonment.
Ghassem Beit-Abdullah, a father of two, was 33 and Abdullah Karmollah Chab, a father of three, was 39 at the time of the execution.
Iranian authorities have used Moharebeh (waging war against God) charges against a wide range of people including those involved in armed robbery and members of banned opposition groups.
According to IHR’s reports, more than 90% of those executed with Moharebeh charges for political affiliations, belong to ethnic groups such as Kurds, Arabs and Baluchis.
There are many reports of the use of torture to extract confessions and unfair trials in such cases.
At Least Three Prisoners Executed in Tabriz
Iran Human Rights (IHR); August 4, 2019: During the past two weeks, at least three people have been executed in Tabriz Central Prison for murder charges. One of them was suffering from a mental disability.
According to IHR sources, on the morning of Tuesday, July 30, a man was hanged at Tabriz prison for murder charges. IHR could identify him as Samad Mahmoudzadeh.
Kurdistan Human Rights Network published the news piece first. Samad was a resident of Tabriz city and was arrested for killing his wife’s brother around two years ago.
Moreover, on Tuesday, July 23, two prisoners were hanged at Tabriz Prison on murder charges. They have been identified by IHR as Aghil Shadehi, 31, from Ajabshir district and Behnam Ranjbar.
A well-informed source told IHR, “Behnam Ranjbar was suffering from a mental disability. He had been prescribed with many psychiatric medications.”
None of the above-mentioned execution has been announced by Iranian media or officials so far.
At least 110 people were executed in Iran in the first half of 2019.
Only 37 of the executions have been announced by authorities or Iranian media.
Iran Human Rights (IHR) could confirm 73 more through its sources. IHR only reports the unannounced executions if it could confirm those with two separate credible sources. Therefore, the actual number of executions may be even higher than reported.
There is a lack of a classification of murder by degree in Iran which results in issuing a death sentence for any kind of murder regardless of intensity and intent.
