Arkansas Supreme Court Decision Allows New DNA Testing in Case of the ​“West Memphis Three,” Convicted of Killing Three Children in 1993

On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence. 

Indonesia: Judge in mosque loudspeaker blasphemy trial arrested on corruption charges

A panel of judges in the district court of Medan found Meiliana, a 44-year-old Chinese-Indonesian woman guilty of blasphemy and sentenced her to 1.5 years in jail for allegedly complaining about the volume of the loudspeaker in her neighborhood mosque. 

The decision has been heavily criticized by many parties as a travesty of justice, but stands pending appeal. One week later, the head judge in that trial is now facing his own serious legal problems after being arrested by Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency.

Officers from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) today arrested Medan District Court Deputy Chairman Wahyu Prasetyo Wibowo, along with seven other people, based on the results of an undercover operation.


“Of the eight people (arrested), there were those who served as judges, clerks and other parties. They are suspected of being involved in transactions relating to the handling of corruption cases in Medan,” KPK Deputy Chairman Basaria Pandjaitan told Detik today.

Wahyu acted as the presiding judge in Meiliana’s trial and read out her verdict in court on August 21. There is no evidence yet to suggest that he was arrested for anything related to her case.

Instead, the arrests are related to allegations that suspects charged by the KPK had been bribing officials in the Medan Corruption Court. 

KPK officials that they had confiscated a large amount of Singaporean dollars as evidence in the case. 

Officials have yet to reveal any more details, saying that a final determination of the suspect’s legal status would be made following a day of interrogations.

Meiliana’s verdict and sentence has been heavily criticized by many, including senior religious and political figures who argued that complaining about the volume of a mosque loudspeaker should not be considered blasphemy.

Utah requests execution of death row inmate

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah requested on Tuesday that a man who’s been on death row for almost 25 years be executed. Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. In the death warrant application, the state’s lawyers said Honie used up his appeals and there is no longer any legal reason to stop Honie’s execution.

Four More Prisoners Executed in Iran

Authorities of the Islamic Republic executed four more prisoners over the weekend as death penalties continue to rise in the country. The Iran Human Rights Organization reported that three inmates were executed on April 27 in Tabriz Prison for drug-related offenses. The inmates were identified as Amir Moharrami, 36, Davoud Namyari, 33, and Sohrab Hokmabad.

Iran | 10 Men Executed in 2 Days in Isfahan Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); May 1, 2024: Ten men including an Afghan national, were executed in Isfahan Central Prison over two days. Seven were on death row for drug-related offences and three were sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder. According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, two men were executed in Isfahan Central Prison (Dastgerd) on 28 April. They were sentenced to qisas for murder but their identity has not been established at the time of writing.
