Thousands demand death penalty for Chinese murderer in Japan

One month ahead of the trial of a Chinese murderer in Japan, thousands of signatures have been collected to demand the death penalty for the man who stabbed a Chinese girl to death at her doorstep in Tokyo.

The suspect, Chen Shifeng, is scheduled to stand trial on December 11 in Tokyo for the murder of 24-year-old Chinese student Jiang Ge on November 3, 2016, in the capital of Japan.

Jiang's mother began to collect public signatures in August to call for the death penalty for Chen. She also flew to Japan this past weekend to garner more support. There is no exact record on the total number of signatures, but in lettered signatures alone, she has received 2,249 names as of October 29. 

On Sina Weibo, posts containing the link to the online petition were reposted tens of thousands of times.

"We understand that one is rarely sentenced to death in Japan, but we believe that it is one of the most heinous crimes to brutally kill an innocent girl due to his personal grudge with someone else. The suspect Chen Shifeng also showed no remorse after leaving the victim's family in pieces. We believe that Chen Shifeng must pay for his crimes and we plead for Japanese authorities to protect law-abiding citizens' human rights and sentence Chen Shifeng to death," said the petition letter, which was addressed to the Japanese judges and the trial jury in the name of a Chinese citizen.

Amid the public outcry to punish the murderer, Jiang's roommate Liu Xin has also come under criticism. Liu is an ex-girlfriend of Chen, and their former relationship is allegedly one reason for Jiang's death.

Chen allegedly followed Jiang back home to seek Liu when the murder took place. Liu allegedly refused to let Chen in when Jiang was attacked, but later claimed that she heard nothing and that the door was unlocked. However, neighbors say that they heard Jiang's desperate scream for help.

Liu's absence of apology and comfort to Jiang's family triggered even wider discussions as well as criticisms. She has also reportedly threatened to withdraw from the police investigation after her personal information was released online during her avoidance of contact with Jiang's family.

Many have criticized Liu's "lack of conscience" and want to hold Liu legally responsible for the death of Jiang Ge. Some legal experts have pointed out that while Liu may not be legally accountable, she should not be exempt from moral judgment.

Indiana | Media unlikely to witness first execution in 15 years

Hoosier prison staffers, the condemned’s friends and family members, and the victims’ family members may soon witness the state of Indiana’s first execution since 2009. But it’s likely that no independent witnesses will be included. Joseph Corcoran, who killed four people in 1997, is scheduled to be executed Dec. 18. Taliban authorities in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday executed a convicted murderer by gunfire at a sports stadium, in the sixth public execution since their return to power. The condemned man was shot with three bullets to the chest by a member of the victim's family in front of thousands of spectators in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province, according to an AFP journalist at the scene. The evening before the execution the governor's office called on officials and residents to "attend this event" on social media.

Paris (AFP) – Iran hanged a 26-year-old man for a second time Wednesday months after a previous execution was halted half a minute in, an NGO said. Ahmad Alizadeh was arrested in October 2018 on a murder charge, which he denied, and was sentenced to death, Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR), which tracks executions in Iran, said in a statement. His death sentence was carried out on April 27 in Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj outside Tehran. But just 28 seconds into the hanging he was brought down from the gallows when the victim's family suddenly shouted "forgiveness". His "lifeless" body was successfully resuscitated and the execution was halted, IHR said.

U.S. will appeal judge's ruling that 9/11 defendants can plead guilty and avoid the death penalty

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Defense Department will appeal a military judge's ruling that plea agreements struck by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and two of his co-defendants are valid, a defense official said Saturday. The ruling this past week voided Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's order to throw out the deals and concluded that the plea agreements were valid. The judge granted the three motions to enter guilty pleas and said he would schedule them for a future date to be determined by the military commission.

Japan rules out ending death penalty despite panel's call for review

The Japanese government on Thursday ruled out abolishing the death penalty, rejecting calls by domestic legal experts for a review amid international pressure to end executions. "The government thinks it is not appropriate to abolish" the death penalty, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told a press conference.  "The death penalty is unavoidable for a person who has committed an extremely grave and atrocious crime."

Iran issues death sentence for Kurdish political prisoner Verisheh Moradi

Verisheh Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner and a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR), has been sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran on charges of “armed insurrection” (baghi). The verdict, handed down by Judge Abolghassem Salavati, followed two court hearings on 16 June and 5 October, and the death sentence was formally notified to Moradi’s lawyers on 10 November.
