Indonesia: Three Men Arrested Trying to Smuggle Crystal Meth on Local Flight

Indonesia's BNN
Jakarta. Police arrested three Lion Air passengers who were caught smuggling crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu, on Monday (09/10) by hiding them under their genitals at the Juwata Tarakan International Airport in Tarakan, North Kalimantan, a statement released by the airport said.

Hemi Pamuharjo, head of Juwata Tarakan International Airport, said the arrested individuals were named Edi, Baharuddin and Ramli and were in possession of 30 packets of crystal meth, 28 of which were hidden underneath the suspects' genitals.

The three men were attempting to board Lion Air flight JT 739 heading to Makassar, South Sulawesi, at the time of their arrest.

According to Hemi, Edi was detained first during a routine security check at the airport’s Screen Check Point 1 (SCP 1) as officials were suspicious of a bulging item between his thighs. When conducting a body check on Edi and his partner Baharuddin, the security personnel found a plastic bag containing crystal meth shoved into both men's underwear.

Police officers brought the two individuals to the local station to be questioned, where officials learned of a third suspect, Ramli, who was already on board the flight. The body check resulted in discovering crystal meth in his pants and in his shoes.

"The three suspects are currently at the Tarakan police station for further investigation," Hemi said.

According to National Anti-Drugs Agency (BNN), 807 narcotics cases were discovered in Indonesia in 2016, in which 1,238 suspects were arrested, including 21 foreign nationals.
