It is soul-bruising to contemplate the torture that 10-year-old Anthony Avalos endured in his Lancaster home for more than a week before dying last year. Whippings with a looped cord and belt. Repeatedly held upside down then dropped on his head. Getting slammed into pieces of furniture and against the floor. Hot sauce poured on his face and mouth.
The road map of the abuse stretched from head to toe on his small malnourished body — bruises, abrasions, scabs and cuts visible on the outside. Traumatic brain injury and soft tissue damage on the inside. All allegedly perpetrated by his mother, Heather Barron, and her boyfriend, Kareem Leiva.

Pakistan: 4 death row convicts hanged in various cities

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Four death row prisoners were hanged on early Wednesday morning in the jails of Lahore, Bahawalpur, Toba Tek Singh and Dera Ghazi Khan while execution of two convicts was postponed. The dead bodies of the prisoners were handed over to their families.

According to details, death row convict Fayaz was executed in the New Central Jail Bahawalpur. Fayaz was awarded death sentence for killing his would-be son-in-law just before marriage in 1997.

Death row prisoner Qamar Zaman was executed in District Jail Toba Tek Singh. Qamar was awarded death penalty for killing a man named Iqbal in 2001.

Another death row prisoner, Saif, was sent to the gallows in District Jail Dera Ghazi Khan. Saif was guilty of killing two people, including his wife, in the name of honour in 1996.

Another murderer, Munir, was hanged in the Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore. He was awarded death sentence in 2003 while execution of two other convicts was postponed.

More than 250 death row prisoners have been hanged so far as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on death penalty on December 17, 2014 for those convicted for terrorism a day after the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar that left 150 persons including mostly children dead.

There are more than 8,000 prisoners on death row in the country.
