Norway’s Envoy Defends No Breivik Death Sentence

The 21-year sentence issued for mass murderer Anders Breivik is a proof of the functionality of the Norwegian legal system and should not be considered “naivety,” Norwegian Ambassador to Turkey Janis Bjorn Kanavin has told the Hürriyet Daily News.

His remarks were an indirect response to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent criticism of the Scandinavian country when justifying his recent suggestion that capital punishment should be reinstated in the Turkish legal system.

“We did not succumb to the temptation to say that an extreme crime requires extreme measures, or measures beyond what is described in law,” Kanavin said in a recent interview. He said that although Brevik’s crime was “out of proportion to anything that had ever happened in Norway,” the country had still managed to remain within the boundaries of the law and not change it according to the crime.

Last week, Erdoğan said that the prison sentence given to Breivik was insufficient and that he should have been given the death penalty instead to ensure peace for the families of the victims.

Iran sentences popular rapper to death for supporting Mahsa Amini protests

An Iranian court has sentenced to death a popular rapper jailed for more than a year and a half for supporting nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death, local media reported Wednesday . "Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth," the singer's lawyer Amir Raisian said, quoted by the reformist Shargh newspaper.

PETALING JAYA: Amnesty International Malaysia has commended Malaysia for the abolition of the mandatory death penalty and for imposing a moratorium on the execution of the death sentence, which has led to an overall decrease in the use of the death penalty by the courts. However, the rights group urged the government to extend the moratorium on executions until the death penalty is fully abolished.

Kansas - A judge has denied a request by death-row inmates Jonathan and Reginald Carr to be resentenced in a December 2000 crime spree that included five murders. The Carr brothers filed motions in November requesting a new hearing to determine whether the evidence supports the death penalty.
