On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

Saudi Arabia: Three men executed for drug trafficking

March 11, 2015: Three people were beheaded in Saudi Arabia for drug trafficking.

Hammud Hajuri from Yemen and Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Saudi national, were executed in the province of Jizan after being convicted of smuggling amphetamines and hashish into the kingdom.

In a separate case, Fadi Abdulrazzaq, a Syrian national, was executed in the province of Jawf for smuggling amphetamines.

These executions bring the total to 43 so far this year. That is four times the number of people executed in the Gulf Kingdom during the same period last year – 11.

Around half of the executions carried out so far this year were for drug-related offences.
