After acquittal of ex-death row inmate, debate needed on Japan's death penalty

Japan should be ensuring the safety of its citizens, but instead it is taking people's lives. Is it acceptable to maintain the ultimate penalty under such circumstances? This is a serious question for society. The acquittal of 88-year-old Iwao Hakamada, who had been handed the death penalty, has been finalized after prosecutors decided not to appeal the verdict issued by the Shizuoka District Court during his retrial.

Pakistan: Two death row prisoners hanged at Multan Jail

MULTAN (Dunya News) – Two terrorists of a banned organization, Ahmed Ali alias Sheesh Nag and Ghulam Bashir alias Doctor were hanged till death at the Multan Jail on early Wednesday morning after their mercy appeals were rejected by President on January 3, 2015.

Ahmed Ali alias Sheesh Nag had gunned down three people on Railway Road in Multan on January 7, 1998 while Ghulam Bashir alias Doctor had killed six police officials including DSP Allahnawaz in Multan on October 10, 1999.

Tight security arrangements were made around the jail on the occasion with troops of Pakistan Army in complete control of the security.

Nine militants convicted of terrorist attacks have been hanged so far as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on death penalty on December 17, 2014 for those convicted for terrorism a day after the deadly attack on Army Public School in Peshawar that left 150 persons including mostly children dead.
