Japan should be ensuring the safety of its citizens, but instead it is taking people's lives. Is it acceptable to maintain the ultimate penalty under such circumstances? This is a serious question for society. The acquittal of 88-year-old Iwao Hakamada, who had been handed the death penalty, has been finalized after prosecutors decided not to appeal the verdict issued by the Shizuoka District Court during his retrial.

Egypt's Morsi may face death penalty for leaking state secrets

CAIRO, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi may face death sentence on charges of leaking national security documents to Qatar, the official MENA news agency reported on Sunday, citing a judiciary source.

The former president along with 10 others will face trial over charges of handing national security files to the Qatari intelligence and Doha-based Al-Jazeera news channel under orders from the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood.

"The indictment issued by the public prosecution has included a number of charges under the penal code that can be punished by the death penalty," the source said.

Relations between Qatar and Egypt have been tense since mid- 2013, when Morsi was toppled by the army after massive protests against his rule.

Qatar is a key ally of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which was designated as a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in December last year.

Morsi is now being tried in three other cases for inciting deadly violence against protesters, conspiring with foreign organizations and involvement in a mass prison escape during the 2011 protests that toppled former Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak.
