From 2010 to 2015 I was incarcerated in Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, the Tennessee prison that houses death row for the men’s system. On one side of a gate, 250 of us lived in a “support staff” unit working maintenance, landscaping, kitchen service or whatever else kept the facility operational. On the other side of the gate were maximum-security prisoners and those in protective custody, and a unit just for the condemned.

Dubai worker sentenced to death over murder of wealthy businessman

Dubai: A worker faces execution after a court convicted him on Wednesday of premeditated murder of a wealthy businessman although the killer’s lawyer contended that his client was defending himself against being raped.

The Afghan convict, B.G., and his two countrymen, Z.H. and A.A., were said to have used knives to kill the Iraqi businessman and steal his belongings.

The Dubai Court of First Instance handed B.G. capital punishment while his two accomplices were sentenced to life in jail.

The Afghan trio entered a not guilty plea and denied the charge of intentionally killing the victim and stealing his three mobile phones, car and wallet.

Presiding judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi said the three-judge bench unanimously agreed to sentence B.G. to death.

Z.H. and A.A. will be deported following the completion of their punishments.
