On April 18, 2024, the Arkansas Supreme Court decided 4-3 to reverse a 2022 lower court decision and allow genetic testing of crime scene evidence from the 1993 killing of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis. The three men convicted in 1994 for the killings were released in 2011 after taking an Alford plea, in which they maintained their innocence but plead guilty to the crime, in exchange for 18 years’ time served and 10 years of a suspended sentence.

Execution of a minor offender in Iran

A 21 year old man was hanged in Northern Iran for an alleged murder he committed at the age of 17. Despite ratifying the UN Convention for the Child’s Rights, Iranian authorities continue execution of juvenile offenders.

Iran Human Rights, March 7, 2014: The local news website Bloghnews reported last week about the execution of a 21 year old boy for an alleged murder committed at the age of 17. According to this report the boy who was identified as Mehras Rezaei was convicted of murdering his cousin Ramin four years ago. He was sentenced to “qisas” (retribution by kind).

Iran Human Rights (IHR) has now through an independent source confirmed the execution of Mehras ad the fact that he was 17 year old at the time of committing the alleged offence.

Iran is one of the few countries in the world which still practices death penalty for juvenile offenders.
