India | Migrant Worker Sentenced to Death for 2018 Rape & Murder Case in Kerala

A migrant worker from Assam was sentenced to death by the District and Sessions Court for raping and murdering a 60-year-old woman at Puthenvelikkara in 2018.

According to reports, the North Paravoor Additional District and Sessions Court pronounced a death sentence against 28-year-old Parimal Sahu, a resident of Nagaon district in Assam. The court found him guilty of trespassing into the house, assaulting and raping, and murdering the woman and destroying evidence.

The accused was slapped with a fine of Rs 2,20,000 and the amount will be paid in compensation to the victim's son who is mentally-challenged.

The deceased victim who was staying along with her mentally-challenged son was found murdered at her residence at Puthenvelikkara Bazar on March 18, 2018.

The convict was living in the outhouse on rent with 3 other migrant workers.

Additional Session Judge Murali Gopal Pandala observed that the case comes under "the rarest of rare" warranting the maximum penalty of death, "considering the diabolic nature of the crime after trespassing into the house of a widow with a heavy stone, ravishing her brutally, strangling, smothering and hitting her on her head and face several times with the stone and trying to pass on the blame to her mentally-challenged son."

A team led by M R Murali, the then Vadakkekara SHO, carried out the probe and filed the charge sheet. The victim was found lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom on the ground floor of the 2-storey building.

The victim suffered deep injuries on her head inflicted with a heavy object.

Earlier in December 2020, a court in Assam sentenced a man to death for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in 2018.

Additional Sessions Court Judge handed the man, identified as Mangal Pyke, the death sentence after convicting him under Sections 376 (A) and 302 of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to sexual offences leading to death, and murder.

The incident took place in 2018, near the Dikorai tea garden under Sootea police station.

Pyke was related to the girl and had visited her family in Biswanath for some work.

He lured the girl by offering her chocolates and took her to a nearby jungle where he raped the child before killing her.
