Thailand | Australian Man Enters Not Guilty Plea Over Teenager's Death

An Australian national accused of murdering a Thai teenager and concealing her body inside a suitcase appeared in a Thai court on Friday, formally entering a not guilty plea to all charges.

Simon Peter Carman, 45, faced the Pattaya Provincial Court following his indictment by prosecutors. He has been held at the Pattaya Remand Prison since late June, following an investigation into the death of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla.

Carman was formally indicted on multiple counts, including murder, concealing a corpse to hide the cause of death, abduction of a minor over 15 years of age for indecent purposes, and two counts of committing indecent acts on a minor.

During Friday's court appearance, Carman denied all allegations. According to media reports from the courtroom, he claimed that he and the victim did not engage in sexual activity and asserted that he acted in self-defense. Carman alleged that an argument broke out over money after the teenager followed him, claiming she grabbed a kitchen knife and pointed it at his throat during the altercation.

The case began on June 25, when Tunchanok Donhomla was reported missing by a friend. Thai police reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from a condominium on the outskirts of Pattaya. The footage allegedly showed Carman and the teenager entering the building together in the early morning hours and later showed Carman leaving the premises alone carrying a large black suitcase.

Investigators tracked the suitcase to a deserted area near railway tracks in Pattaya, where the victim's body was discovered. An autopsy later confirmed that the victim died of suffocation.

Carman was intercepted and arrested by authorities at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 26 as he attempted to board a flight bound for Australia.

The Pattaya Provincial Court scheduled the next hearing for October 12, 2026, as the judiciary weighs the evidence to determine the progression of the trial. Under Thailand's legal framework, a conviction for premeditated murder carries penalties ranging from long-term imprisonment up to the death penalty.
